Am I Crazy Enough To Try This?

We picked up a cool book from the library, Survival Handbook- The Official U.S. Army Guide by the department of the Army. I grabbed it because I know DS13 is into wilderness survival, but I'm really enjoying the book myself. I think I'll have to add this book to our back pack.

I do find the information about creating a flotation device out of your pants hilarious though. I just can't see that tip really working out. Has anyone tried this? You are suppose to remove your pants, tie the legs shut, and while treading water, parachute your pants over and around your head while holding open the waist, trapping air in the legs. You then tie off the waist and wrap the inflated legs around your neck to keep your head upright and floating. I may just have to freak out my co-workers and give this a try at the pool. (I'll probably just make my kids try it to keep my pride intact!)

Oh that is funny! I know I probably wouldn't be able to do that!!! If you do make your kids do it you'll have to video it and then share! Wow that is amazing after watching the video!! What strange and good idea! LOL Thanks again for the add. Enjoy your day

It works, but you have to keep doing it over time. We had to learn this in a life saving class I took (about a hundred years ago!). I was a qualified, certified life guard when I was a teen. Easy in a pool - probably a lot harder to do with waves moving you around in the ocean or on a big lake.... and you have to be good at treading water to accomplish it.

They have to do the pants trick in order to pass the last level of swimming lessons in our park district swimming classes. I have seen it done.

Very interesting book, and years and years ago the pants thing was also part of the Girl Scouts swimming lessons. I don't know if they continue doing it but they probably do. I could never do it, I had fatigue back than and couldn't tread water long enough.

Is it supposed to be a certain kind of fabric? I don't believe my hands are strong enough to tie knots in wet denim. ; ) (Also, I don't believe I could tread water long enough to do it....the guy in the video made it look easy...I'd sink. lol)

I have never tried the float-in-the-pants thing, but I know someone who has. He was in the Navy and they train them how to do it. It does work.

LOL! I've heard of this but never tried it. I wonder if the pants have to be of a certain material or if it should work with any pants.
