Honeycrisp, I love you.....

Special K wasn't quite special enough this morning. I was hungry again after only an hour. Honeycrisp apple to the rescue! Remembering I was too busy to eat it last night at work, I dug it out of my work bag and along with another cup of warm tea, its hitting the spot. If you've never tried a Honeycrisp, pay the extra pennies and give one a try. They are so crisp and juicy, a perfect blend of sweet with a little bit of tartness.

The boys have dentist checkups today, which I'm dreading as well. I know they will recommend DS10 see an orthodontist again. I'm just not sure he's ready for braces. I want him to be mature enough to commit to taking good care of his teeth. I had braces and was not self disciplined enough to get over the embarrassment of brushing my teeth at school. After the brackets came off, I had enamel damage. I want DS10 to feel like he has some say in this decision, plus I'm not sure how we're going to pay for it.

DS13 also expressed how much he hates dental appointments. The picking, the drilling, he's very sensitive to dental pain. I can't figure out if its just anxiety or if he really doesn't respond to Novocaine. He did have one bad experience when our usual dentist wasn't there. The substitute drilled and filled his tooth without Novocaine. Now we insist on seeing only our dentist, but even with this, the last time DS13 needed work done, he said he felt it the entire time. He asked for more Novocaine and our dentist gave it to him, but it didn't help.

Why does tooth pain have to be so severe? Teeth aren't that big. I'd rather get a pap smear and a boob smash than have my teeth cleaned. Is it because those nerve endings are so much closer to your brain? I find it annoying as well that your teeth will hurt if your sinuses are bothered. I wish our teeth were like shark teeth. Wouldn't it be better if we could just keep growing more?

Tuesday's ramble...

Frost advisory tonight. It seems too early, but when I think about all the nature cues, its not surprising. Most of the geese and ducks have lone gone, the squirrels have been ramped up OCD style, digging and burying their food supply, and even the garden seemed to shut down early.

I think I'm ready though. I had DH haul out the extra down comforter, and I scored at the Farm & Fleet store yesterday- "Lowest prices of the season", grabbing us a few pairs of jeans. Now if only I can find my socks. Preferring to be barefoot, I'm always challenged when it comes to finding socks and footwear.

I'm motivated to pull the looms back out and knit more caps and try scarfs too. The chill in the air has me wanting to bake, and I'm back brewing and drinking my tea on the hot side.

I'm trying Hawthorne Berry tea. I've read its good for your heart and circulatory system. I also heard it may help RLS. I read that many believe in the healing power of Hawthorne Berry because its believed Christ's crown of thorns was made from Hawthorne Berry branches. Of course I thought that was cool, and I had to Google to see if I could grow a Hawthorne Berry bush in my yard!

The boys have been enjoying their new Xbox 360 and I'm surprised it hasn't consumed all their time like I thought it would. Its just another console to play different games. They are still enjoying other activities.

Yesterday they took turns sawing down the wild Mulberry bush trees that had taken over on the corners of our Sleepyhouse. I love how easy Mulberries spread and the fact the birds love them, but the reality is, we can't have them growing so close to the house and risk damaging the foundation. We still have a larger tree on the corner of our lot. The boys did a bit of pruning, removing the branches touching the ground. Hopefully this helps strengthen the tree. I know all the sawing will help strengthen my boys' arms!

I think even though it may be scary to watch your baby yield sharp tools, its good to place them in their hands with supervision. I can remember years ago our doctor warned me that boys have a natural fasnication with knives. I thought at the time, whatever, how can he know, but later discovered it was true. So we've always tried to be there, guiding them as to how sharp they can be, and the damage that will occur if you don't focus and concentrate on using them correctly.

Case in point, the day mom almost took off her finger tip slicing a bagel. Had the blade not caught in the bone, her fingertip would have popped off! And yesterday, peeling butternut squash too quickly, her DNA almost was added to the risotto. Its amazing how many times I've warned my children only to injure myself! LOL!

At the library yesterday, I saw the latest issue of National Geographic. It has a really cool fold out poster of a giant Redwood tree. I have to see if I can buy a copy of the magazine now, just for the poster! I love trees and its on my bucket list to see a Redwood. The people climbing the giant tree looked like ants.

Speaking of ants, we watched a Goosebumps video, Awesome Ants last night. We borrowed a whole slew of Goosebumps videos at the library, getting in the Halloween spirit. There's something about curling up under a blanket and watching a scary video together when its cold and dark outside that is comforting and bonding.

I guess I've babbled enough. I better get up and get moving. Have a great Tuesday!

Baked Brown Rice & Squash Risotto

Description:
I adapted this recipe to make it more healthy and vegetarian. I wasn't prepared for how much it would make! It would make a great side dish at family gatherings or for a pot luck.

This version is sweet and savory. I'm inspired to alter this recipe next time, making something entirely sweet and dessert like, a pumpkin/squash rice pudding, using vanilla soy milk instead of veggie broth, skipping the onion, pepper and Parmesan cheese, and adding nuts and dried cranberries. I'll also try making it in a slow cooker, rather than the oven.

Ingredients:
4 C low sodium vegetable broth
2 C brown rice (uncooked)
2 C diced raw butternut squash (peel and remove seeds first)
1 1/2 C canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
1 small yellow onion, minced
1 t pepper (or to taste)

2 t dried basil or 1/2 C chopped fresh basil
1/4 C finely grated Parmesan cheese
2 T non fat, plain yogurt

Directions:
Pre-heat oven to 400F

In a 3 quart baking dish, add veggie broth, rice, squash, pumpkin and onion and stir gently to combine. COVER with aluminum foil tightly and bake for 30 minutes.

Remove from the oven and stir to see if the rice has absorbed all the broth. Return to oven if the rice has not yet puffed and absorbed all the liquid. (I had to bake mine for another 15 minutes.)

When the dish has finished baking, stir in the basil, Parmesan cheese and yogurt to give it a final, comfort food, creamy texture.

Clouds look heavy, with a desire to fall down. Wind is dancing with the trees, stretching those branches. Its a blustery, beautiful autumn day, and I've got a warm, hug in a cup in my grasp. Life is good!

Choosing To Stay Well

So much to do, project lists keep getting longer, yesterday didn't go entirely as planned, and I found myself so fatigued. By the end of the day, I was an official couch potato, but I think I needed it. I'm sure my body is fighting off colds and flu.

Speaking of flu, I know a week from now, when I head in for my yearly checkup, my doctor will ask if I want a flu shot. I've gotten by all these years without one, and frankly its been almost 2 years since I've been full blown flu sick. I've had those times where I think I'm getting sick, but have always been able to stay ahead of it and beat it back. I'd rather try to eat healthy, exercise and try other natural, immunity boosting ideas.

I know I may be taking a risk, but after reading about the possible negative effects of flu shots, I feel better choosing alternatives that are known not to have any adverse effects, even if those alternatives may not offer total protection.

I know this means I need to be disciplined. I need to exercise everyday, stay away from sugar, and veggie up. I need to also listen to my body and rest when it needs the down time. I can't allow the stress and pressure of life to take my focus off of taking care of myself.

I'm not comfortable with giving away this responsibility to a needle and syringe. I really don't want things done for me. I'm more of a do it herself kind of person. In fact, when I do get sick, this is what stresses me out, I can't take care of myself and those I love.

I'm an autodidact. I'm a home schooling mother. I know many wonderful things are possible when you choose to take on those challenges yourself. I'm not going to allow fear to make decisions for me.

If I do get sick, at least I'll know I gave my body what it needs to fight off the bugs, and hopefully the virus won't find my temple an inviting place.

On that note, I'm going to tie my own shoes, move my legs, swing my arms and breathe it in and out, on my own. No one can do this for me, and this gift I give myself, means so much.

X-Box 360 Day?

We made it to Friday, but I can't completely relax until DH is home, and our family is united for the weekend. I'm happy about not having anything pressing to do, but the spring in my step is missing, and I think its because I'm missing my husband.

I have a complete love affair with my husband. From the day I met him, I didn't want to be away from him. He is my Soul One. To me, he's the person who makes life a party. Nothing is as fun without him.

The boys have saved and today is the day, I believe, we will shop for an Xbox 360. Originally they were saving for the Pro model, but prices have dropped by $100 and if we buy the Elite model before October 3rd, we can qualify for a $50 rebate. We are now really just comparing warranties.

Radio Shack is in the lead, but that would also mean, we'd have to wait another week for delivery. Today, I promised to research Walmart's warranty policy. (Shuddering!!) I am not a fan of Wal-Fart at all, but the XBox is priced the same at all retailers. It comes down to the warranty prices and what they include. I prefer Target, but their electronic warranties do not have great reviews. Best Buy is a nightmare as well.

I think I'm going to make this experience a little less painful for me, by waiting for DH's work day to end, suggesting we meet for supper at Pizza Oven and then heading over to Wal-fart as a family.

Have a great weekend!

It's not the same when he can't be with us. Waiting a few more hours until life gets fun again.

Thursday 13

1. A hummingbird is about 36 inches from my head, trying to eat from the inpatients. I didn't know they chirped.

2. Things are going relatively smooth, work wise. What's going on? I'm suspicious.

3. I wish I had a large, upright freezer I could fill with fresh from the farm veggies. Our little freezer is chock full of berries and tomatoes, not leaving any room for anything else. Too bad I'm not craving smoothies or tomato sauce.

4. Halloween & Fall decorations are slowly making their way out. I'm ready to let go of summer and enjoy autumn with all my heart.

5. Tomorrow could be the day they've been waiting for. The money is saved and counted.

6. The new Pearl Jam CD is staring at me, sending a telepathic message- "Listen to me! Listen to me!" Can I put aside my Blind Melon boys for awhile?

7. I'm declaring tomorrow "Stay Put Day." Its been too long and my books are feeling lonely.

8. I'll probably end up wasting my free time, cleaning stuff.

9. Its foggy season in Wisconsin. Every morning and every evening. I find it so romantic.

10. Wish they wouldn't have moved the Dr.Oz show to the afternoon. Now there's nothing to watch while I'm on the treadmill.

11. Received a postcard if we don't tag our Christmas tree next weekend, we won't get one. The farm is running low on trees after a spring flood, and they won't open for the season, but they are still allowing past customers to tag what's left. We may have to find a new farm.

12. The Funnel spider is making her way out. Too bad its not bugs, but flower petals knocked over by the humming bird.

13. I better call my Posse Moms and see what's up for today.

I actually had a moment this morning where I did not know what day it was. It took me a few minutes to figure it out! :) Life's been too good!

Blofeld Bars (Walnut bars)

Description:
Look what I got!!

DH's co-worker decide to share his walnut bar recipe with me and even made me a pan full of them as a thanks for the sewing I did a few weeks back.

I believe his version, the one pictured, skips the chocolate filling, but they are still so good! Now I have to be good, wrap them back up and freeze them away before I eat them all! They are so delicious!

Ingredients:
Walnut Bar dough:
1 C butter
2 C brown sugar
2 eggs
2 t vanilla
1 t salt
1 t baking soda
2 C flour
2 1/2 C oatmeal
1 C roasted walnuts, divided

Chocolate filling:
1 12 ounce bag of chocolate chips
1 large can of sweetened condensed milk
2 t vanilla
2 T butter
1/2 t salt

Directions:
Cream butter, sugar, add eggs, vanilla, salt, soda. Stir in flour, oats and 1/2 of the walnuts. Press 3/4 of the dough into a 9 X13 bar pan.

Melt chocolate filling ingredients together in a double boiler. Pour chocolate filling over the dough in the pan. Top the chocolate with remaining dough, "making dough islands in the chocolate sea." Top with remaining walnuts.

Bake @350 for 30 minutes

Mandatory Kindergarten Law Passes In Wisconsin

I'm bummed out. They passed legislation requiring all 5 year old children to attend Kindergarten before entering into first grade. As if truancy officers weren't busy enough?

Seriously, I think this is to set the precedent for mandating Pre-K enrollment. Soon your 4 year old will be required to leave their home, being separated from the family at such a young age.

Because we are life long homeschoolers, this doesn't really effect my family, however, perhaps the new law will cause some newer homeschooling families to pause. You can't homeschool for kindergarten, and then expect to enroll your child in a public school the next year without approval from the school board.

This new law is all about money. Its not about preparing children for a solid education. It will take more money to staff more teachers, build more classrooms, but hey, it also means free daycare! Now both parents can work! Better send all those daycare teachers back to school for their teacher licensing. (Tuition dollars feed the machine too.)

It has been proved that removing children from the home at an early age DOES NOT increase a person's capacity for learning. In fact, the opposite has been proved. Young children need the security of a loving home.

Its not like our public schools are the perfect place for a person to get an education either, so why are we insisting on sending young, not ready, children into an imperfect method? I know many 5 year olds that developed later and were not ready for Kindergarten at 5. Some do better beginning at age 6 or 7. I guess it just means more ADHD medicine sales.

I work with a young mom who has been telling me of her daughter's struggles adjusting to kindergarten this year. My heart breaks because its clear her teacher is failing to understand this little girl's heart.

I don't care how great a teacher could be, no one loves your children like you do. Its not only spiritual, but its also biological. There are wonderful teachers out there, but they can only do so much for each child when they have 10 or more to look after. (Many school ratios are higher than that.) Teachers would rather teach, than be disciplinarians. They can't share their passions and mentor children if they are being asked to raise them in the absence of parental influence.

Our society already suffers terribly from the breakdown of the family unit. Parents and children are pulled apart rather than unified.

I feel so blessed my boys have had the chance to bond together as siblings, because they've been learning and living together 24/7 in our family unit since the day DS10 was born. The reality is, they will spend more of their lives together than they can share with their parents. I will most likely, pass on while they still have many years left on this earth. I can leave knowing they have each others back. Blood is thicker than water.

I will continue to fight for my right to raise my children the best way I see fit, and being a law abiding citizen, I will continue to pay taxes, which most likely will be raised now. I can of course use my vote on election day, but the reality is, I'm a minority living in a dumbed down America.

Anybody have a recipe for walnut bars? DH brought me one his co-worker had made and now I'm craving another. The co-worker is being secretive and won't share his recipe. :(

The rainy day brought out these guests in our basement window wells

We had several of each species in each window. Boys are researching to determine what they are. After going so long without rain, this was a treat!

First a little work, then I'll be back for fun.

"A smile is a light in the window of the soul indicating that the heart is at home." - Anonymous I love this! Smile on!

Weekend Fun 9/21

I need one more day of weekend. It was too great to be confined to 48 hours.

Saturday Grandma arrived, bringing favorite K-town pizza! Now that we know we can take and bake from one of our favorite pizzerias, we'll have to make room in the freezer and bring a cooler next time we visit Grandma!

To work off that za, we took a stroll through town, admiring the changing leaves and ending up at our little Lake Leota. We saw schools of minnows being chased by a huge snapping turtle. Our lake restoration project has a long way to go, but just seeing the turtle brought us hope.

Sunday our plans changed. DH & I decided to save the money and not go to the concert in Milwaukee. We still had "date afternoon." Grandma took the boys to see a movie, while DH & I hiked around at the UW Arboretum. Surrounded by trees and my wonderful husband, it couldn't get much better, but it did. We came across a flock of wild turkeys, and on a remote leg of the trail, a deer.

She came out of the forest, directly onto the path in front of us. She appeared to have a slight limp, but she continued on our path, walking directly in front of us. I told her to stay in the protected arboretum park and she'd hopefully be safe from hunters.

After our hike, which went by too quickly, we had lunch out and did a little birthday & Christmas shopping. We really must get a jump on this. We'll spend less money and be able to pay for it slowly, a few gifts each paycheck, rather than resort to using credit cards.

We've already made plans for next weekend, that have me so excited, I'm really hoping this week goes by quickly. Next weekend marks 8 years we've been in the Sleepyhouse and its the week before DS13 turns DS14! I can't believe it! Where does the time go?

After hearing that hacking kid, walking to the bus stop, I'm SO grateful my boys home school! I can't believe he is being sent to school like that. It was a brutal, wet, cough. At one point, the boy stopped, and bent over. I thought he was going to spew in my front yard!

We should have went swimming. (Frustrated we stayed home waiting for someone who never showed!)

Thursdays Highs and Lows....

Yesterday we had so much fun with our home school posse. We played Spud while practicing Latin numbers. I felt like a kid again, on the playground. It's motivation to keep moving. I don't want the day to come when I can't move around. I want to be the kind of person who heads into the twilight years of life, still up and running.

It was wonderful to see our friend, who recently lost his mother to cancer. He seemed to be in good spirits, and it reminded me of what a wonderful mother he had. It broke my heart when she lost her battle a few weeks ago. It seems unfair children have to lose their parents, and when its a home schooling parent, this seems amplified.

On the other hand, the closeness home schooling families share brings strength. I'm sure my friend was grateful she had spent so much time at home with her children. They were there to love and support each other through all the good and bad times. Her legacy shows in how healthy and well adjusted her children are, even after suffering such a devastating loss.

After our great posse visit, I unfortunately had to head to work. Usually, I enjoy going to work, but this day it was difficult to leave the fun of friends.

I'm discovering errors here and there, as my co-workers navigate their way through our scheduling software. These are simple errors that are happening because they are trying to go too fast. I got frustrated because to me, these errors are being made because staff is working too quickly, not taking the time to read careful. They tell me though, "Its the program."

In truth, there are some changes the programmers could make, but on the other hand, its not that difficult to read "Jellyfish Saturday 10:30am October 17 through December 19th" and realize that class is not meeting this Saturday, September 19th. I don't know how I can help staff other than point out, its ok to take the time to read what's in front of you more carefully.

I have a few ideas I could implement, but over all, I think somehow, I have got to help staff realize learning something new doesn't have to be so challenging if they take down their anxiety wall brick by brick.

I'm sorry for being cynical with a flavor of superiority, but why do so many expect to be able to work on autopilot or give up before even trying? Is it fear or lack of confidence? Is it laziness?

I'll get off the soapbox. I'm sure I've offended co-workers!

Last night we watched the first new episode of Survivor. I don't want to watch the rest, but I will have to because my family will. There is a guy, Russell, who has to be the most evil player I've ever witnessed on the series. He dumped his own tribe's water supply to cause turmoil and burned a tribe member's socks. He set up fake alliances with every woman, referring to them all as stupid. He LIED about being in a house, filling up with water during hurricane Katrina, in which he watched his dog die.

When he crossed that line, I knew he'd be the most hated man in America. To lie about climbing onto a roof, axe in hand, during hurricane Katrina is a slap in the face to the thousands who really lost so much! This man is so damaged. I have to wonder what happened to him to make him choose such an evil path.

Before tucking my boys in bed, I told them, "Please don't grow up to be Russells!" I know I really don't have to worry about that. The love, respect and support we share together in our family, ensures we won't end up sorry human beings who choose evil over doing what is right.

Wednesday Thoughts

My parents headed back to Minnesota this morning. Why did they leave those evil cookies?!

I'm sure I'll want a nap later, but getting up early really does help you get a jump on the day. I struggled last night at work to complete a project, but there were too many interruptions. What I couldn't accomplish in 5 hours, I completed in 1 just because I was left alone. Working at home can be much more productive.

The boys are very close to reaching their financial goal in order to make their secret purchase. They've been working extra chores. Next step, deciding whether to keep this purchase a secret or reveal it. I think they feel misunderstood and judged. Or it could be they don't want to hurt someone's feelings.

Date night is only a few days away! DH is taking me to see Alice In Chains. I'm not a huge fan, but its a concert, and I'll have the chance to let my hair down. Plus its time spent with DH!

I was thinking of painting our front door. It really needs it. I thought about choosing a color other than white, but on the other hand, if I paint the door dark, it will absorb heat in the summer and make the living room hot. I will probably end up just painting it white again.

DS10 has decided he doesn't have to be a hamburger for Halloween. I told him the foam was on the expensive side, and I wasn't sure how I could sew and stuff a costume to resemble the burger costumes he sees in the Burger King commercials.

His latest idea is to be a doughnut. I'm trying to wrap my head around how I can design that costume. I'm wondering if I could sew a slip cover of sorts for an inflatable inner tube? I'll have to sketch it out. I do like the cop/doughnut idea, like the photo I found at an online costume shop.

I better get moving. DS10 is up and eyeballing the computer. I've been sitting here too long!

Visitors and Gardening notes

We're recovering from the rhino rather nicely. DS10 is most definitely over it and DS13, hardest hit, has turned the corner. I'm hoping he continues to recover and doesn't fall back like he did last week.

Grandpa P and Cheryl stayed over for a quick visit. Grandpa P treated us to supper out at Old Country Buffet. He sure doesn't show it, but he loves to eat. I wish I had half of his metabolism. We hope to some day be able to travel down and visit them in Florida. Maybe Grandpa will even give us a ride on his Harley!

We're getting ready to put the garden to bed. We harvested a third bucket of Roma tomatoes, but I think they will start to thin out now. We did end up with blight at the end of the growing season. We had heard it was in our area, but since we had started our plants from seed, we hoped we'd be spared. Apparently blight is an airborne disease for tomatoes. Now I'm not sure how we should clean up the bed. I've heard you do not want to compost plants affected with blight. You are suppose to bag them up and throw them away. I just wonder if the soil needs to be treated?

We didn't get as many butternuts as I had hoped. Next year we will position the plants better and ditch the vertical frame idea. Although we did end up with nice fruit, we had a few too many cool nights and the vines growing on the vertical frame got too chilly. The vines on the ground fared better.

Our watermelons and cantaloupes don't look ready. I'm afraid we didn't have a hot enough summer to bring them to maturity. We'll wait a little while longer and see if any ripen up.

Over all the Square Foot Garden method is a great idea for beginning gardeners, but next season I think we'll experiment with something different. We want to grow bigger and better!

I'm starting to complain, there's no rain.

It just feels like I have nothing interesting to report....

I'm falling behind on logging in our days. It feels like there is nothing good to write about, which is pretty sad, but the truth is, the Rhino virus is in the Sleepyhouse.

We missed our home school posse on Thursday. I decide it would be best if we didn't share our cold germs. Turned out we weren't the only ones to cancel. Hopefully we'll all be better by next Thursday, and we can practice our Latin.

My parents arrived and we shared our day with them, taking them to Costco and Culvers for lunch. They left us for the quilt show and to visit other relatives and friends. We'll see them again when they head back through on Tuesday.

Thursday night our cable, internet and phone went out. We played basketball and Uno. We ended our day watching a Harry Potter DVD.

On Friday we noticed a cable guy lurking around our neighbors' back yard. I asked him if he was working on the outage, and he told me they thought it was because our neighbor cut through a line. Our neighbor is putting up a fence, one hole at a time. The cable guy had to call in two others and 20 hours later, we were connected again.

Having all that down time, I did manage on Friday to catch up on cleaning. Along with the usual chores, I even took down curtains and washed them. Amazing what one can accomplish when the distraction of Facebook & Multiply isn't there! LOL!

After playing Cinderella, I found myself wiped out. The past few days its been like this, but if I stop, drink some fluids and rest, I've been able to keep the rhino from taking a hold of me. Unfortunately, it hasn't be the same story for the boys.

DS13 started first several weeks ago. He seemed to be getting better, but turned south again. Tonight he decided he needed to go to bed at 8:00pm. I really hope that helps and tomorrow he feels better.

DS10 seems to be moving his rhino through more quickly. He was second to suffer, but he seems to be first to recover.

There seems to be so much illness going around, not just Swine flu. I swear my food choices, supplements and walking have been helping me. I've also took up dry brushing, which could be helping as well.

Tomorrow we have more visitors arriving, my father in law & his wife. I can't remember the last time we saw them. I just hope the boys are feeling well enough to visit. The house isn't perfect, and I have no idea what to cook, but I'm not going to stress over it. It would give the rhino another chance to get me!

I better go check on my sick one and brew a cup of insurance. Hope you're having a great weekend!

Can't figure this one out. DS13 has had a sore throat for almost 2 weeks. Thought it was allergies but Claritan doesn't seem to be making any difference. This morning he woke up with stomach pain, but it quickly went away and he's been eating normal all day. Tonight DS10 says his throat is sore, but more so his ears are bothering him. Maybe we do have a virus in the Sleepyhouse? Do I pay the $70 insurance co-pay only to have the doctor confirm this or could it be something treatable? Doesn't it seem unfair doctors charge you even when there is nothing they can do for you?

What's Going On In Our Sleepyhouse Lately....

DH took the boys to see Final Destination in 3D. They nicked the glasses because they were pretty cool looking, even though the theater was asking patrons to recycle them. They enjoyed the movie and DH assured me there wasn't too much 3D sex. LOL!

I wasted my free hours trying to find a bra and pair of jeans that fit. No luck. Of course I'm not a mall shopper. I would have preferred to shop Farm & Fleet, but they were closed for the holiday. I did score a pair of shorts for next summer for only $3.

I added more reasons why I love my husband to my ongoing list. He decided to help the boys go through their clothes, sorting out what fits and what doesn't. We ended up finding enough hoodies we could open our own store. We now have 3 bags for Goodwill.

We're learning Latin numbers this week. A family in our home school posse was interested in learning Latin and thought we could learn it together. I knew this would be a tough sell to my unschooled children, and my gut reaction was one of stress. However, we are blessed with wonderful friends! They want to use a game approach rather than a textbook/worksheet approach, so we are brain storming game ideas. What's important to my boys is still being able to have fun with their home schooled friends when our posse meets.

This week we are using Latin numbers while we play Spud. I also thought we could enjoy our Nerf Gun Wars using the Latin vowel sounds. Each player chooses a certain Latin vowel, and then when you nail them with a Nerf dart, they have to yell out that vowel sound as they dramatically fall to the ground. We may create a few other non-human Nerf gun targets, using Latin words, the boys could take aim at.

I'm just so grateful for our home school posse being up for making learning fun and giving ownership of it to the boys.

My parents should arrive tonight while I'm at work. DH will have to entertain the in-laws, (add another reason to the why I love him list). The boys and I will spend the day with them Wednesday, and that evening my sister can take over supervising the parental units.

I think we'll have to schedule in a doctor's visit sometime this week as well. DS13 has had a sore throat now for two weeks, without any change. Hearing the ragweed is really bad in our area, I thought it could be allergies but the Claritan I've been giving him the past 4 days doesn't seem to be doing anything. (Note to self- get back on Emergen-C!)

Well, I better get climbing the laundry mountain and lace up our walking shoes for our library trek. Its going to be a busy week, but I'll try to pop in every now and then! Take care!

Parental Units arrive tonight!! I wish I didn't have to work evenings, but I will get to share my daytime hours with them Wednesday.

Thoughts On My Unschooling Heart Tonight...

Its back to school time, and the questions are being asked of me.

"What curriculum are you using?"

"What are the boys doing for high school?"

I've even noticed doubts coming from my husband, which surprises me. Personally, I've never felt stronger in my conviction to give my children an unschooled life. We've been home, learning together through life for almost 11 years now.

This morning, I watched on the Fox News Network, an unschooling debate. It was all but 3 minutes. (Fox News is dumbed down, but that's another blog.)

One of the negative points was Unschoolers can't possibility be prepared for the real world. Ummm.... Unschoolers live and learn IN the real world. We don't need to prepare for it because we're here already! We never left it.

Thinking back on my own experience of public schools and college. Was I prepared for the "real world" as I left formal, institutionalized education? That would be a big, fat NO WAY!

Schooling made choices for me. I didn't have to give it much thought. I just followed the path they created and played the game the way they wanted me to play it.  Once out on my own, I had to make those decisions for myself, and I hadn't had any practice doing that.

I floundered for a few years before finding my way, and honestly feel I wasted years of my life just trying to figure out who I was and what I wanted to accomplish. Always doing what others asked of me, I had no clue how to dream my own dreams.

Now that I'm free and have awoken the true autodidact nature God gave us all, I have such peace. When presented with obstacles, I no longer panic, but understand how challenges can always be creatively worked through discovery.

I watch with sympathy as others struggle and stress out because something seems like its too hard or difficult to understand. They don't get it. The process of following your curiosity and questioning leads to greater self confidence. We aren't suppose to know it all, and those who seem to know more than us, really don't. We all have our own set of life experiences and individual talents.

I think if those who doubt the process could spent time with us, they'd understand, it really does work. My children have learned to read, write and solve equations. My children have also developed self confidence, self discipline, and they have a loving respect for others.

I'm not worried that the kid across the street is learning about the Civil War and mine isn't. Why not? Because lately, World War II is more interesting to my son.

What gives me comfort is knowing my children know how to learn. Every day presents new questions they seek out answers for. I can't stop that process and if I tried to control it, I could possibly do more harm than good. How far they take the ride is up to them, not me.

Cinnamon rolls are in the oven. I used the bread machine we scored on vacation to knead the dough. We'll see how they come out. The dough seemed really soft to me and the rolls barely held their shape, wanting to "blob out" all over the pan. Maybe next time I'll use less yeast or a little more flour.

Today went by too quickly. Hoping tomorrow is just as blessed!

The Lost 40 & Itasca State Park

The Lost 40-

After driving down what looked like deserted roads, we found it, although I will admit, it took us awhile to find the trail head. If you end up there one day, I will give you a hint. Its not by the pit toilets!

The Lost 40 is actually over a hundred acres of forest that missed the loggers' axes because it never was marked on the initial maps. Its a rare section of old growth forest in the Chippewa National Forest.

We tested out new walking sticks Grandpa and Mormor gave us. It was a short hike, about 1 mile, but so much to see! You had to walk slow so you could look up and marvel at the size of pine trees over 350 years old. We learned the difference between red and white pines, and I must say, I really prefer the red ones. The bark is so interesting to me.

A little red squirrel stayed close to us, more concerned about filling his cheeks than any danger we posed. He seemed to follow us, leaving us thinking he must be used to being fed by humans.

At the end of the path, you left the woods and came upon a brook. It was so beautiful, I wish I had a kayak to float down and see where it led.

We circled back and all too soon, the hike was over. I wanted to loop it again, but Gull Lake was calling. Jared needed tube time and Jakob wanted to try fishing.

Lake Itasca State Park-

I love this park and always forget how large it really is. We of course waded across the Mississippi headwaters, but this time, we wanted to stretch our legs and hike a bit too. We sprayed up with Deep Woods Off- the one time I will subject my body to Deet, but it didn't matter. The mosquitoes were brutal. Our goal was to hike 3 miles to the fire tower. We decided to cut across and make that 1 mile, but it was still a mistake. We should have drove to the parking lot near the fire tower and hiked the .5 mile instead.

At one point, I counted two dozen mosquitoes on DH's back. He suffered bites all over his head and even one on his lip! I somehow managed to get a few bites where you don't want to be seen scratching! Next year, we will wear mosquito netting.

The hike to the fire tower, although shortened, was a challenge not only because of the mosquitoes, but the incline. I suppose it makes sense to build the fire tower on the tallest location, but I kept thinking,  how am I going to climb the fire tower after climbing up this hill?

We took it slow and made it to the fire tower. The motivation that the mosquitoes wouldn't fly that high, helped me over come my fears and make it to the top. This was the first fire tower I'd ever made it all the way up. The previous fire tower I tried to climb was at my parents county fair. I made it to the tree line but then froze up, not able to climb higher.

We now have a family goal to find more fire towers and climb them.

Next time we visit Itasca Park, I'd like to look into staying there, either camping or renting a cabin. There are over 50 miles of trails and so many peaceful, lakes and ponds. Of course we will wear mosquito netting head to toe, or visit after the first frost.

Bemidji Road Trip 2009

Visiting the big, north woods.

A few weekend road trip notes before I forget all the fun details....

Drive up went great. Kept watch on our speed, lots of police all the way through Wisconsin and across Minnesota as well. Can certainly tell these states need revenue. By the 9th hour in the car, we were getting a little punchy. Rolled into town giggling like crazy.

Mormor and Grandpa's little house is as cute as always. The boys settled into the loft and we really enjoyed the cool night air coming in the windows. Mormor's garden is pretty impressive for being this far north.

Saturday morning I scored a bread machine from my parent's neighbor's garage sale. Can't wait to get home and give it a try.

Enjoyed delicious Canadian Walleye for lunch with Grandpa. YUM! I can't live up here because I'd eat too much, that's for sure.

After lunch, we walked and played along the lake front. Saw a huge Osprey in the trees right above us. I'll have to post the photos when we return. Hopefully they will turn out.

Did a little shopping and ended back at the little house, relaxing, watching movies.

Tomorrow morning we're headed to the Lost 40. Its an old growth forest that never was logged because it wasn't mapped correctly. We may find a few 300 year old trees! I can't wait!

The rest of the day we'll visit at my sister's house by the lake. The boys will probably hunt for leeches and try a little fishing. We'll eat more Canadian Walleye! Yeah! (Wish we could get this fish down by us.)

Better, get going. Grandpa says the corn on the cob is ready and they're giving me grief for not eating!!! HELP!!!

Enjoying the big north woods. Tomorrow we search for the Lost 40 to find a few really old trees in need of hugs. Hoping the hike will help burn off some of the delicious calories we are consuming!

Babbling On...

Yikes! I'm home alone! Well, sort of. Yumi and the birds are with me, but my children went over to a cousin's house to hang out and drool over his X-box.

Why is it I dream of having the place to myself, yet when that comes true, I freeze, not knowing how to best enjoy it?

Wait....let me go put on my music and grab a Dandy Blend Latte.

I should be cleaning and packing for our Minnesota trip, but that's no fun. I should be re-drafting training documents for work, but I'm not feeling it.

Instead, I'd rather sit here, by the breezy window and let my thoughts wander.

Last night I had to ask a little girl's parents to not allow her to dance and jump in the windowsill. You would think that would be a no brainer. She was dancing and jumping in the window like it was a stage. They had actually moved a chair so she could climb up into the window to perform. They completely failed to see the danger in allowing your child to jump inches from a glass window. Sometimes I feel like I'm surrounded by morons. The little diva threw a temper tantrum, and I received dirty looks from her parents. Of course you know if this child would have fallen through the window, we would have been sued.

Got my feet wonderfully muddy this morning, picking cucumbers for my mommy. She wants to make "pick-a-lily" (don't know how to spell it but that's how it sounds.) I'm not a fan of relish, but I do love farm fields. I was very grateful the farmer allowed me to self pick and even more surprised when he wouldn't take any money for the cucumbers. He also invited me to pick all the Romas I wanted no charge, but I told him I was waiting for ours to ripen. I hope I don't regret that decision. A part of me wanted to pick them though just to bring to a food pantry somewhere. I can't believe how much food is wasted not even harvested!

Made my Mamma Jama Boob Squish appointment. I'm just a little overdue. The death of a home schooling mom I knew pushed me to pick up the phone. She lost her battle with breast cancer and my heart is breaking for her two children who must go on without her now.

Parents shouldn't have to leave their children until those children are old and grown themselves. Not that there is ever a good time to lose a parent, but it seems so unfair she was called to heaven before her children were ready to be without her. So please bring those cold metal plates down on me and pinch away. I'd rather have a head start if I ever have to run the cancer race.

Better get moving. Maybe its the tunes or the fact I just realized, I could be dancing around like a crazy lady since no one is home to see me! :)

Is a little freaked she has the house to herself right now. - Wait. I'm referring to myself in the third person like I'm on Facebook or something! :)

Crazy time

Its turning out to be one of those weeks where everything seems out of our control. By the time our weekend get away comes, I will be so ready for a break. We are heading to my folks house in northern Minnesota, a true little house in a big wood.

Yesterday we had a huge flock of cowbirds pick our spot to hang out. They devoured the bird seed feeder and then attacked the garden. There had to be over a hundred birds. The tomato cages collapsed but I think they mostly pecked at the grasshoppers.

Our Romas still seem ok. In fact we picked our first two ripe ones this morning. I'm watching for blight which I understand is a huge problem in our area this year. We started our plants from seed, outdoors though, so I don't think they are effected. The blossom end rot doesn't seem to have effected all the of the fruit either. Of course I'm thinking the majority of our maters will turn red while we are away!

I'm thinking we're headed towards an early fall. Not only are birds beginning to flock, the Canadian Geese are practicing formations. Our neighbor's tree seems to be turning colors too!

I'm trying to run errands, getting stuff done before we head north this Friday, but I'm also trying to put in extra hours at work. When will I learn?

I'm going to slow down this afternoon and force myself to take a break, even if everything isn't done. I'm looking forward to listening to Dayna Martin's Unschooling discussion on blog talk radio.

Our crazy ass bitch kitty just bolted out the patio door, launched herself from the deck, landed on the unsuspecting Tom Cat in our yard and ended up tangled in a ball of fur under my neighbor's deck. Thankfully she came out when I shook her treat container, not a scratch on her. She may be one tough cat, but what I am going to do with her?!

Weekend Update 8/24

Cross Demolition Derby off DS10's bucket list. Sunday we visited the Kenosha County Fair and spent the afternoon in the sun, watching cars smash up. I've found a new vice! I can't wait to see another one.

We ate yummy fair food, and I really appreciated the Kiwanis booth for offering such great low prices compared to the other booths around. We ended our day at G(ma)s and its a tradition, if you're in Kenosha, you have to eat pizza. Today I have to go back to healthier choices.

Saturday we watched a really good movie, Dororo. A  very interesting story of a man who makes a deal with 48 demons. In exchange for power and control of the world, he offers up the body parts of his unborn son. The baby is born missing 48 body parts, but still alive. The wicked father wants to strike it dead, but the mother, desperate to save her son, wraps the baby up and places him in a basket, floating him down the river. The baby is discovered by a Shaman who loves and cares for the baby, helping him to grow by Frankensteining body parts for him. The baby grows to a young man, and then sets off to find and destroy the 48 demons. As he slays each demon,
the Frankenstein body part is replaced with his true body part, released from the demon. Of course he eventually learns how his biological father cursed him and they eventually meet up to resolve that.

I know it sound gruesome, and yes there is violence in it, but the story was compelling, and there is comic relief. A young woman who was orphaned and forced to became a thief, joins him on his journey and through helping him, her heart is changed.

Trying to grab the reins...

My dreams are trying to warn me. I've been saying yes a little too often. I was busy, busy, busy and when I woke up for real, I had that feeling like I was forgetting something. I can't help it. I do like to stay engaged in life, and my body can't keep up with my brain. There are just so many things I want to do and learn about.

DH took the boys out to drive golf balls. It was their first lesson and they had a great time. Now we have to look for better used clubs. The ancient ones we have will not hold up and if fact, one of them shattered to pieces as DS13 hit the ball. I bet that made it more enjoyable actually. DH said the range was empty except for one other man, so they practically had the place to themselves. They are going to try and make this a regular "boys' night" activity.

I'm jealous. I want to learn to golf too. Of course I also want to learn more about permaculture, immunology, glycemic index and metabolism, cultivating yellow watermelon, peach trees, stone mosaics, recipes for Nutella, Pilates, and networking printers... to name a few. Not enough hours in the day to satisfy this autodidact.

Somewhere in all of this I have to factor in housework, but lately, I've discovered its easier to walk away- literally. I've been going for hour long strolls. My new walking shoes are definitely broken in and you know, I feel no guilt leaving the vacuuming undone. Its better for my health right if I walk instead of clean house?

I'm sure at some point this will be debatable, but isn't this how it usually goes? We are busy enjoying living and learning, and the house cleaning gets pushed to the breaking point. Or you have company coming and you're forced to drop it all and pull out the dust rags. Either way, its not wrong to wait for that motivation. Life has priorities and dust bunnies will hang around and wait for you.

This fresh, perfect air, cool summer breezes and sunshine will not stick around. We have to get out and enjoy it when we can.

Next time I wake at 4:00am, I'm just going to try and stay up. I think I hurt my back by laying in bed awake too long.

Been Crazy Busy

Feeling bad for not blogging as often and since this has become a journal of our lives, I need to stay with it.

Been busy working with DH on prototypes for a project he's designing. Trying not to think about what will happen if one is chosen, and then I have to make 30 instead of only 4.

Red Lobster belated birthday supper Friday night- Yum! I love me some garlic mashed potatoes and cheesy garlic rolls!

Scored a few gems at Half Price books- 2 Pilates books and The Ultimate Brownie Book (1000 recipes) How's that for Ying-Yang book shopping?

Scored more inspiration at the library- Pebble Mosaics, Gaia's Garden and A Weed By Any Other Name-The Virtues of a Messy lawn or Learning To Love The Plants We Don't Plant

DMIL visit! Glad she's back from Europe and seeing her photos makes me want to see my ancestral homelands.

Short but sweet hike at Carver Roehl Park. (See photo)  Plan on going back with boots and a change of clothes for frog hunting.

Refused to pay $89.99 for a compost bin. Bought a $10, made in the USA, black garbage can instead. Tomorrow we drill holes!

Smashed a huge spider inside my t-shirt. I won't soon forget the crunch and ooze. Let it be a warning to others thinking of hitching rides out of the forest.

Yumi's appetite is alarmingly up. Gobbles up her daily allotment way too quickly. Poor kitty can't have more. She's already overweight. Why is she so hungry lately?

Butternut squash is now growing vertically with the aid of used knee highs. No complaints from the new neighbors yet.

Alarmed to discover two Romas starting to ripen only to have black bottoms. Is that blight? We're hoping they're not all doomed.

Looking forward to the weather cooling off this week. Its easier to walk for that hour if its not so hot and humid. Autumn will feel good but this year its bitter sweet as we'll have to put our garden to bed for the winter.

Better get to bed. Have an early morning work meeting, but the rest of the day we can chillax.

Last Day of 40

I'm trying to relax, but something's got me tense. I think its the sewing project I've been trying to help my husband with. I'm sewing prototypes for several products he's designing and although I can crank out Halloween costumes every year, I'm not a professional sewer. I'm sure I'm not ergonomically sitting correctly because my neck is stiff after only one full morning of sewing.

DS13 is reading all about pistol, revolver and machine gun history. Not what I would want to study, but its interesting to him. He also did a little tinkering, fixing our computer speakers and helping me hook up, once again, the dryer vent. We need to figure out a permanent fix for that darn thing. Its driving me crazy!

DS10 is spending a great deal of time playing Earthbound and Fun Orb. I kick him off of the computer every now and then so I can get some work done.

I know we've all been spending more time indoors with the temperatures climbing but that's okay. I so want to turn off the central air and bring the fresh air back in, but right now it isn't very fresh outside. There's still one last dairy farm within olfactory distance. Plus when its hot and humid, I just shut down and lose all productivity.

Need to wrap my head around how I'm going to finish all my work projects before I leave for vacation in a few weeks. There doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day, but what else is new. I know I should take it one day at a time and not stress.

I actually had a dream last night wasps were keeping me from sleeping. The boys bed's were fine, my MIL' s was fine, but for some reason, DH & I had wasp nests above our bed. DH was trying to calm me telling me the wasps wouldn't be active at night while we slept, but I couldn't relax knowing there were wasps over my head. Its mirroring my real life.

It just doesn't seem like tomorrow is my birthday, so I'm postponing it until the weekend. I'll enjoy it more when I don't have work commitments.

On that note, I'm going to try and relax now before I have to head out.

Chicago Road Trip Day 8/9/09

Outside of the Shedd. DS10 is holding up 4 fingers because he noticed the Chicago Flag has 4 stars on it.

Last minute road trip to Chicago. We went the the Shedd Aquarium and the Willis Tower.

Hot Town Summer In The City- Weekend Notes 8/8-8-9

Saturday DH & I enjoyed our errand date, but I made the mistake of not being vigilant, skipping breakfast and then over doing it at lunch. I regretted that cheeseburger the rest of the day. My body shut down. I wanted to sleep and my brain got fuzzy. For me, it was a confirming lesson to eat right or pay for it- every bite counts!

Saturday night we had cousins over for game night, which was followed by more horrendous eating, but Uncle Mike's Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip bars are too good to be refused.

Our wonderful neighbors offered us the rest of their City Passes. They had been on vacation and hadn't used up all the tickets. So Sunday was an impromptu road trip to Chicago!

We got up early to beat the traffic and it paid off. We first visited the Shedd Aquarium. Our favorite was the giant shark tank. Its shaped so that when you stand there, all you see is fish and sharks swimming around you. Its very cool. You can't really see where the glass is. The Sawfish kept swimming back to flirt with me.

Our ticket included the 4-D movie Planet Earth. It was fun, but if I would have had to pay money for it, I would have been disappointed. It was very short. Its "4-D" because the seats are rigged to spray air and water at you. The seats also vibrate and there is an annoying poker in the back as well as a wire that whips your legs. So when the shark jumps out of the water to grab the seal, you jump, when the rats are running across the screen in 3-D, you feel them scratching at your ankles.

After spending half the day at the Shedd Aquarium, we headed to the Willis building, the former "Sears tower." Its the tallest building in the midwest. If our neighbors hadn't given us their City Passes, there is no way we would have enjoyed this. The line was a 3 hour wait to get to the top, but because we had City Passes we were treated like VIPs, allowed to go to the head of the line. If you visit Chicago and want to do the museum circuit, (Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium, Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry and the Willis Tower), buy the City Pass. Its so worth it!

I was surprised my fear of heights wasn't that bad up there. I even ventured out onto the glass Skyview box. You are 103 stories up, with nothing around you except glass. Of course I had to cling to DS10 when I was out there, but I did it! Another great one to add to my list of Forty Firsts!

On the way home, we decided to stop for what else, pizza of course. (I'm getting back on track with healthy eating today!)

As we headed back to Wisconsin, we drove into a storm, but missed the worst of it. It was exciting to watch the lightning and see the storm clouds roll in.

By the time we made it home, I was ready for a shower, my PJs and bed, but my sister brought over a Dala Horse Birthday cake decorated hippie style. She gave me the best Birthday card too! She is so sweet! (My birthday is Wednesday.)

I'll post photos from our weekend in an album soon. Today I have to get back on track!

Random Thoughts On A Stormy Morning

Scary nightmare this morning! Glad the thunderstorm woke me up early.

Praying MIL makes it home safe.

Who brought that evil Pecan Kringle into the house?

Is there crack in Kringle?

I'm excited about my "errand" date with DH. We are going to his work so I can help him on a project he's designing, making a stop at Cosco and then grabbing popcorn. Its not what you do, but who you do it with!

The more I walk, the more I want to keep walking. Came across an inspiring story of a woman who went from barely being able to walk half a mile to jogging in marathons within 2 years. She didn't change what she ate, but still dropped almost 100 pounds.

When you are used to sewing on a machine made in the early 60's and you have the chance to sew on a machine made within the last decade, you learn to love sewing again!

Hoping DH's entry wins that $9000 machine at the fabric store!

Of course it would be strange having a sewing machine that's worth more than the car I drive.

Found it interesting in the book the Stand, the government tells the people not to worry. Its not like this flu is "Swine Flu."  Could we not have chosen a better book to read right now?!

Think I'll make brownies for our gaming guests tonight.

Wish we had a rain barrel.

I need to research light speed, wartime death tolls and wildebeest.

Better jump in the shower and get this day started.

Why do I always find more books at the library when I forget to bring our tote?

A Lesson From a Baby Bird

The other morning, I noticed a baby sparrow at the feeder, enjoying an easy bite to eat. Soon its parent flew in to the feast and interestingly, the baby began to flutter its wings and cheep. Mom (or Dad) hopped over and began to feed this demanding child.

I watched as Mom would grab a few bites and transfer the meal over to her offspring, who before Mom arrived, was having no trouble feeding himself. While Mom had her back turned, filling up her beak, baby was again pecking at the millet. As soon as Mom was there, Baby was helpless again, chirping and fluttering those wings, "Feed me! Feed Me!"

It made me question, am I still doing things for my children that they could be doing themselves?

I've decided to delegate supper preparations. During the week, there are 3 nights I have to work away from home. Two of the those the boys will be responsible for having supper ready when Dad gets home and on one night, they can do boys' night take out.

So starting yesterday, I told DS13 he was expected to cook supper. I told him he could choose to make anything he wanted. He chose his favorite meal, crumbly meat, (browned hamburger), and mac and cheese. Dad thought the meal was excellent, and I was happy they enjoyed this meal while I was at work. It wasn't something I'd be particularity fond of.

Tonight DS10 is making burger bites with circle fries. I will help him pre-cook the mini patties before I leave for work, which he can reheat in the pan as dad arrives home. He's already practiced taking the cookie sheet out from the hot oven, so this will really come down to time management.

I see this arrangement working out very well. My menfolk can enjoy meals I would rather pass on, the boys learn life skills, DH can relax once he arrives home, and the pressure is off of me when it comes to deciding what to make for supper 3 nights a week. The trick to making this work is allowing them to choose what it is they want to eat and me accepting the "B" list nutritional value of these meals.

Woke up feeling like there was something I had to do today, but I don't know what that is.

Weekend Update 8/3/09

Note to self- GARAGE SALES JUST ARE NOT WORTH IT! We unloaded a few things and the boys made a few bucks for their ****fund, but yard sales end up being so much work with not that much reward. The best part of our sale was when I dropped off the leftovers at Goodwill. In the future, everything is just headed that direction.

Date night went well, but we need to work on relaxing when we're away from the boys. We pretty much ate our meal and then decided we missed the boys so we headed right home for the night. Part of this was I think, because it was a "Friday" night, time we usually spend with the boys as "Family Fun Night." Saturday dates work better because DH has a chance to see the boys during the say on Saturday. Friday after working all day, I'm sure he misses them.

Saturday we did a little shopping, picking up tasty goodies at Trader Joe's. I'm adding- learn to bake Ciabattini rolls- to my autodidact list. So good!

Sunday we gave the boys hiker's choice and they chose Magnolia Bluff, a beautiful park just south of where we live. Its one of my favorites too! I could sit and hang out with my turtle boulder all day long. I would love to visit more often, but truthfully, I don't feel safe yet visiting on my own. Maybe when the boys are a little bigger, we could visit without DH, but for now, this park is a little too deserted. I like it this way, but it also gives me the creeps if I were to be on my own out there.

Sunday evening we installed a new dryer vent. A few months ago we had the repairman out to fix our dryer and ever since I noticed our basement felt warm and humid. I checked and sure enough, he didn't hook up the vent correctly. Rather than get angry, it was a confirmation that we need to learn to do more stuff ourselves. I felt dusty and a little scratchy from brushing up against the insulation, but we fixed it. I won't have crickets jumping out at me when I open the dryer door anymore!

Well, I'm running behind this morning. I better get moving and get my walk in before things heat up. Have a great Monday!

I tweaked a friend's perfect recipe, using chocolate chips instead of raisins because my family doesn't like raisins. I also switched from using all butter, to using half butter, half margarine, because I was worried they would spread out too much.

Ingredients:
1/2 C butter
1/2 C margarine
3/4 C sugar
3/4 C brown sugar
2 eggs
1 t vanilla
1 3/4 C flour
1 t baking soda
1/2 t salt
3 C oatmeal
1 1/2 C chocolate chips

Directions:
Cream together the butter, margarine, sugar and brown sugar. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix in the dry ingredients and add chocolate chips.

Preheat oven to 375. Drop by cookie scoop or spoonfuls onto a silicon or parchment paper lined baking sheet. Bake for 8-9 minutes.

A Thursday 13

1. Yard sale tomorrow- I know I won't feel truly prepared, but I'll take joy in the fact the stuff is no longer taking up valuable space in my home.

2. Baking brownies, cookies, Rice Krispy treats - DS10 has decided to run a bake sale and lemonade stand along side our yard sale.

3. Date Night on Friday! - That gives me something to look forward to! We're using a $10 off coupon so the fruge in me is happy.

4. Feeling sad about saying goodbye, but I'm learning that goodbye is never forever. I'm just having difficulty coping with the loss of opportunities once that person has gone.

5. Loving the smell of the rain headed my way this morning.

6. I found a class I'd like to take only I don't have a $1000. Going to put on the autodidact hat once again and research "Home Staging" myself.

7. My hour long walks have cured my insomnia. 60 minutes compared to 30 really makes a difference.

8. I have to plan a Chicago excursion. DS10 has expressed an interest in seeing the city. Maybe my last, "Forty First" before turning 41, should be standing on that clear glass balcony on top of the building previously known as the Sear's Tower. That would be an accomplishment for me and my vertigo!

9. I want Sharpie pens. Do you think they are as good as regular Sharpies? I hope they come in the same colors.

10. If I don't get the remaining blueberries in the freezer soon, I will have eaten the entire 5 pound box in two weeks. That's bad right? I'm not turning blue yet.

11. Growing Butternut squash vertically is turning out to be pretty easy. The plants seem to love it and its amazing to see how their vines wrap around the wire frame. Next year we'll have to build more vertical frames.

12. Found a new species of bee in our garden yesterday! Great news! Along with regular Honey, and Bumble bees, we can now add Carpenter to the project list. She was pollinating a butternut for me. Every 3rd bite of food we enjoy comes our way thanks to bees.

13. Perfect timing. Someone else wants to use the computer now.

Have a great weekend!

I have way too much frozen fruit in my freezer. Anyone want a smoothie?

Sunday July 26th

"Why are you taking a picture of your new shoes?"

"Because Stormmie told me to."

These are my new shoes. They were $70 shoes on sale for $50 and I had another coupon for $10 off. I'm usually more frugal than that, but I told myself its an investment in my health. I really needed good quality walking shoes.

DMIL made it safely overseas. Now if we can spend the next several weeks not worrying about whether she decides to go para-sailing, we'll be ok. Grandma- BE SAFE!

We hadn't checked the garden in a few days and today we were surprised to find tennis ball sized watermelons and ping pong ball cantaloupes. I even found a few butternuts taking shape. I'll have to take photos tomorrow.

The boys are watching over the neighbor's garden while they're away. I told them this could be a great idea for a summer home business. Some people may not need pet sitting, but garden sitting to make sure things stay watered and weeded. I'm not sure I have them convinced.

We saw the latest Harry Potter movie yesterday and it stunk. As with most every movie based on a book, read the book instead. I'm not sure I even want to see the rest now. I'd rather keep my memories from the books.

Our living room smells so nice and fresh. We shampooed the carpet and instead of using regular carpet cleaner, I decided we should try using the natural alternative laundry soap I make. It worked like a charm and thankfully, no itchy feet like the last time we tried steaming carpets using chemicals.

This week the boys and I will have to work hard at purging more stuff. I've promised them all proceeds from the yard sale are theirs towards their ******* fund. (I just remembered I can't tell you what they are saving for.)

Well, I'm off to bed early. I'm finding sleep is as important as exercise when it comes to maintaining a healthy immune system.

Falling behind on my notes here....

Its not my fault. If I don't wake up before the boys, I have to fight for a turn on the computer!

Thursday I walked over 2 miles in moc crocs, (generic Croc type shoes).  I don't recommend it. I hadn't planned on doing all that walking, but it was great taking a stroll with my homeschool mom posse. First thing Friday I went out and bought myself a new pair of walking shoes. Pain can be a great motivator.

Friday I believe I was fighting off a bug. My stomach was growling and my head felt thick. It was one of those days where I couldn't decide how best to take care of myself. Took a real nap and that helped.

After a sandwich supper, we enjoyed the sky show, watching thunderstorms roll through. We had so much wind the garden was really blown over, but hopefully things will spring back up.

We watched Friday the 13th on the Spike network last night for our Friday Family Fun movie. The boys had heard about this classic and since it was on tv we thought it would be edited a bit. It turned out to be edited too much, making it difficult to figure out which teen camper was just killed. Of course it was the ending that finally gave us a really good scare.

This afternoon I believe the plan is to see the newest Harry Potter movie. Its been so long since we've read the books, I can't remember what happens in which book.

Well, I better get my new shoes laced up and ready to go. Have a great weekend!

I'm missing the dandelions. Wish they'd resurface.

Our Weekend...

Aren't these cats cute? In another universe where I have more than enough money, I bought several of these guys and they are keeping watch in my garden. I have a weakness for black and white kitties, especially cute round ones!

We spent Sunday visiting with G-Ma, enjoying K-town; thin crust pizza, deep fried green beans, mojos, the art fair, and cool lake breezes.

I'm adding "how to make home made mojos" to my autodidact agenda. They are Italian broasted potatoes, but my husband's family always calls them "mojos."

Sunday evening we watched Apollo 13 with the boys and talked about today's anniversary of men walking on the moon. DS10 asked me if the moon's surface really feels like that, (dusty). I reminded him he'd have to ask an astronaut. I haven't been there.

Saturday we hiked up to the library, about 2 miles. Oddly, my shin splints didn't surface until this morning. DH was sweet. He carried the books, which if you know anything about unschoolers and libraries, you know what a load that was! I don't know what I'd do without him or our Lands End giant tote bags.

On Saturday we also made a popcorn run. I had forgotten about Maxwell Street Days, (State Street sidewalk sales), but we made it through the crowd.

The rest of Saturday we hung out at home, chilling out, with a little responsibility thrown in. I tackled the linen closet, which had become an unorganized mess. I can't believe how many ratty towels I was keeping as "rags." How many cleaning rags does one need? I'll have to post before and after pictures.

Saturday night's scary movie was Nightmare On Elm Street 2. I had forgotten how lame it was, but its been fun sharing these with the boys. We followed that up with another Mystery Science theatre gem, "Overdrawn At The Brain Bank."

Friday night we met DH after he got off of work and gambled on trying The Parkway's fish fry. The restaurant is located in a not so great part of Madison. To our surprise the restaurant was terrific. It was clean inside, with friendly staff and great prices! Our fish was delicious and the service very quick. We spent half of what we did the week before at Christy's and everything was better quality.
We have to remember not to judge books by their cover and take that chance.

An Autodidacts Agenda

My latest list of things I want to learn more about;

Immunity diets- What should we be eating, and not eating, to boost our immunity. I'd like to get through another cold/flu season unscathed and not count on a vaccine.

HTML Code- Why pay for someone else to do what I should be able to learn to do myself?

Butterfly Garden Design- Looking forward to getting rid of more over rated suburban grass

Cookbook publishing- Family reunion less than 1 year away!

Furniture upholstery - Don't ask.

Tree pruning- Maybe mulberries are a nuisance after all.

Wills and living trusts- Embarrassed to report we haven't completed one, which since we have children, is even more stupid to have procrastinated on.

Chemical free decorating- creating a healthy environment

Small business ideas that succeed- More procrastinating I need to correct!

Tie Dying- Only did this once when as a kid. I'd like to know how to create all those cool, swirly patterns.

This should keep me busy for awhile.

What a crazy thunderstorm we had last night. I was sure lightning was touching down in our yard, but this morning the few trees we have are still standing. Garden looks beaten down, but hopefully it will spring back up.

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

My mom is disappointed we rescheduled our visit. I knew she would be. Its not easy for us to travel because we don't have money and need to work. Personally, I don't understand why parents move away from their children. I hope I can always live near ours.

What Our Unschooling Day Looked Like on 7/13/09

We began our day with computer games. DS10 has been trying to build his rank in the Wizard game on Fun Orb.

We made the chocolate oatmeal no bake cookies.

The teenager rolled out of bed.

We next watched a show about women who have climbed K2 and lost their lives doing so, while I blogged & checked emails.

Captain Underpants is the current read of DS10 and DS13 just finished The Talisman. He's moving on to The Stand, extended version.

After reading awhile, we headed outside to tend to our garden. We finished construction on the vertical frame for the Butternut squash. We used telephone wire, hoping since its colorful, the birds won't fly into it.

Since the weather was perfect, we remained outside and did our Bee project. We are collecting data for the Great Sunflower Project. We were excited to see real honey bees, (not wasps) so eagerly enjoying the blooming Milkweed we left for the Monarchs. Although its fun to have the Milkweed growing up through our decking, its really inspired me to create a butterfly garden island somewhere in the yard for next year.

After lunch, we decided to play with the digital camera. We took photos of our Lego guys doing various things, posed for silly photos of each other and last but not least, the scandalous Domo photo shoot in big brother's bed! When the teenager's away, (on the computer), the pre-teen will play!

We fed our parakeets, unloaded the dishwasher, moved laundry mountain and took the garbage and recyclables out. (Always have to do the chores sooner or later.)

DS10 lost a tooth.

Our friends came over in the later afternoon and we played video games until dad came home.

We made supper with DH and gave him the update on our day.

He helped us go through boxes of books, trying to find a book we know we should have, but we couldn't find it. (We really need to purge more!)

We settled down to watch a Mystery Science Theater movie while I researched immunity diets online.

We wound down with reading again before going to bed.

JOHN KIESLOW INVADES OUR PRIVACY

I read something very disturbing in my state's home schooling newsletter. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is releasing birth certificate information without authority to do so.

JOHN KIESLOW, that's JOHN KIESLOW, the Wisconsin State Registrar, has told the Wisconsin Parent's Association's executive director, although he is aware of the Family Educational and Privacy Rights Act, (FERPA), which prohibits any educational agency or institution that receives federal funds from releasing personal contact information for students not enrolled in a public school, he disagrees with the interpretation of the statue and will continue to release birth certificate information unless he is challenged, (sued), at which time he would then consult an attorney.

Wisconsin statute 69.20 says information from birth certificates may be shared "for the purpose of compiling demographic statistics related to planning."

JOHN KIESLOW, I said, JOHN KIESLOW, you have got to be a moron if you can't interpret the meaning of "statistics".

JOHN KIESLOW, allow me to share the Merriam-Webster dictionary's interpretation for you. Statistic- a quantity that is computed from a sample. Statistics- a branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis and interpretation of masses of NUMERICAL data.

I understand why public school districts need to collect data as to how many certain aged children live within their boundaries, but there is no reason why the school district needs to know my children's names and birth dates! Do they need to prepare for the possibility the next Kindergarten class contains too many Jacobs and Emilys?

In this day and age of identify theft, knowing my children's birth certificate is being shared by people I will never meet, let alone be able to hold accountable for, is very disturbing to me.

If I had the money, JOHN KIESLOW'S birth certificate would be posted on the side of a truck and driven around the state. If I had the money I would "challenge his interpretation" and sue the pants off the state of Wisconsin for placing my children's future economic health in jeopardy.

All I can do is call and write my representatives and share my anger at how easy it is to take advantage of an honest tax payer, who also doesn't ask for any money from the state to educate my children.

WHY CAN'T YOU JUST LEAVE US ALONE!  We don't need to be marketed to. We don't need to be included in studies. My home based, private educational program has nothing to do with the public school. Spreading our children's personal information around for anyone to abuse is, in my interpretation, criminal and constitutes identify theft terrorism, MR. JOHN KIESLOW!!

Making spaghetti for Sunday supper. Who's all coming over?

Dawn's Sugar Drop Cookies

Description:
Not healthy- but sweet and delicious! Cookie Project, Batch One

Very easy sugar cookie recipe. My DH said these were the best cookies I've every baked, but personally, I'd prefer chocolate in there somewhere.

Ingredients:
Cookie Dough-
1 1/2 C butter, softened
1 1/2 C sugar
1 t vanilla extract
1 egg
3 C flour
1 t baking soda
1/2 t salt

Icing-
1 1/4 C powdered sugar
2 T milk
1/2 t vanilla

Directions:
Cream the butter and sugar. Add the egg and vanilla. Mix in dry ingredients. Chill the dough in the refrigerator.

Heat oven to 350. Use a cookie scoop or drop by spoonfuls onto a silicon or parchment paper lined cookie sheet. Bake for 12-14 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.

Once cookies are cooled, ice with frosting if desired.

My cookie cottage...

My Facebook friends are a bad influence. One of them has decided to bake a different cookie everyday for the next 100 days. I love this idea, but the reality is, I don't think I could keep up that pace, even giving away all those cookies. I've decided to try one new batch a week.

Yesterday I tweaked a sugar cookie recipe. I wasn't that impressed but DH really seems to love them. I thought they spread out too much, but that's what using butter will do. I'm not a fan of shortening or margarine.

Another FB friend mentioned she was stopping at the "Cookie Cottage." I loved the sound of that. I Googled and discovered its a cookie company, selling really expensive cookies. How much would you spend on a chocolate chip cookie?

I had the thought I would love to have a little cookie shop, in our cute little historical village, but the reality is, I can't see it being profitable. People in my town would not pay what the "Cookie Cottage" charges, and I'm guessing to keep a cookie shop in business, you would need to charge $2 a cookie.

I wish I could figure out what home business to start. I really want to show the boys how to be entrepreneurs, but I can't find a way to turn our passions into paychecks. We'll keep brainstorming.

Fish Friday?

This photo shows why I'm allowing the milkweed to grow up through my deck. We have two chunky Monarch caterpillars that have so far made it through the earwig attack. I really hope they make it!

I woke up too early and my brain was racing with spastic thoughts, like that commercial with the people with internet search overload. I couldn't shut down and chill. My eyes didn't want to be left open, but my brain wouldn't shut off, so I just decided to stay up. Now I'm paying the price. I probably won't be too much fun for our family fun night, but I'll give it my best shot.

DH is hoping we can find a decent fish fry for supper. We're going to try our luck finding a back road bar & grill located on a small lake that is rumored to be a good spot. Its actually easier to find if you have a boat.

Its a wonderful feeling heading into a weekend knowing there is absolutely nothing we are committed to doing. We can go with the flow and see where life takes us.

I do hope I can tackle our book shelf dilemma. How is it I love books but a bookshelf to me looks cluttered and uninviting? On the the other hand, I want the books to be in plain sight so they get picked up every now and then.

I haven't gotten around to stringing up wire for our vertical garden frames. Maybe I'll  be inspired this weekend to tackle that, or maybe not. I don't mind really if the plants sprawl out over the lawn. Maybe I'm  being lazy, but our Square Foot garden box is so overgrown with tomatoes, you can't make out the squares anymore.  I was born to break rules, I'm an unschooler!

Going to try jumping around and see if that wakes me up. DH will home soon and I'll need to have my Friday Fun Game face on!
