Cosco

Isn't there a negative star rating option?

A new Cosco opened up down the block from DH's office, and DH's boss bought Cosco memberships for everyone in the office. We decided to check it out last Saturday. I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon.

Like Sam's club, you have the annoying door checkers to make sure non-members don't get in and you don't leave with unpaid items. There is no variety really, you have to buy the brand they choose to carry. The prices are not a great savings, if they are a savings at all! You have to watch that!

But my biggest complaint about Cosco- THEY DON'T TAKE CASH! You have to pay with either an American Express or a debt card. What kind of store doesn't take cash!!??

I have a "debit" card which is really a check card, allowing Visa transactions to come out of our checking account. When I'm asked, "Debt or credit?", I usually respond "credit" because that way no one will see me using my pin # and did you know your financial institution may then charge your a transaction fee?

Our credit union does allow a certain number of "debit" transactions each month before they begin charging you, but I also know if I answer with "credit" the merchant pays the transaction fee, not me! It stills comes out of my checking account either way.

Costco doesn't give you the "credit" option unless you use an American Express Card, who, from my days in the credit card processing industry, I can tell you charges merchants 10% to process transactions. Merchants pass this 10% on to the consumer by raising their prices. Visa and Master card may be evil, but American Express is the worst of them all!

We had a coupon for a free deli roasted chicken and a case of bottled water. Yumi thought the chicken was good, but the humans in our family did not. I don't usually buy bottled water, but it was a free case. I placed it into the "emergency supplies" section of the basement.

I may go back around the holidays, to buy chocolate in bulk, but I don't think I'll be stopping by Costco on a regular basis, and I know we won't renew the membership.

Never been to a costco, but their is a Sams Club here....of which I'm not a frequent shopper. I guess if you have some items that you use in large quantities or really like to shop around to get a deal, it may be worth it. I'm totally amazed that they don't take cash - that's just too weird.

I used to go to Sam's but it is a good 30 40 minutes from me.. although I still pick up Jobs over there from DNR I really dont go over there any more.. They could have opened up another Sam's but a Cosco came in.. Only complaint I have is they dont have GAIN and they sell landolakes hot chocolate in bulk of 6 vs 12 :(

Other wise I am still getting used to the lay out...
I have heard nothing but praise about the meat and produce departments on some boards I have been on and I would have agree there over sam's.

I love getting all my paper, household (light bulbs) and cleaning product in bulk.. not so much food though I do get sacks. It came in handy when I did the wipes and diaper/pull up thing.

Never been to Costco or Sam's. My MIL has both near her + goes to both all the time. That's really strange about them not taking cash.

your costco doesn't accept cash?
Huh? Ours does. It on;y accepts Amex as credit Cards go, that's the same - but they definitely take cash. And checks.

to me it it is strange they ONLY take AMEX lol

i think it's because they have a deal with Amex - and so they only use them
we use our Amex and we get a certain percentage back at the end of the year. i think it's 3% on gas, the same on restaurants, travel etcetera. And then when we use it at Costco, Costco also gives us money back at the end of the year. I think it's 2% - which is a nice way of paying for the membership. i'm quite happy with the Costco we have around here - i buy clothes there and also DVDs. They're more than a few dollars cheaper than other places. And their pizza isn't terrible for $10.
