They're so smart!

DS 12  Inspired from a survival book, he shares this fact - If you are stranded on a deserted island, a good way to get fresh water is from a fish. Stab a straw through the fish's eye, and try to push the end of the straw into the fish's belly. You can find drinkable water this way.

Me- That is disgusting!! That can't be true!! How gross!!

DS 9 - WHERE DO YOU GET A STRAW ON A DESERTED ISLAND??!!

This is why I know I am still trying to deschool myself. My children's thought processes are still pure. They know the right questions to ask!

Its not about how gross drinking fish juice is. Its about where do you get the straw?!

LOL I guess if you are MacGuiver (sp) you'll have one! LOL I don't necessarily think it has to do with being schooled or not to think of things like this. I think it's more of just how our brain works. My first thought would be 'ew gross' while hubby would wonder where the straw would come from. LOL Both of us were schooled. LOL Maybe it's a guy thing

I thought how do l get the fish?

Maybe you could use a pen--like they tell you to do if you have to perform an emergency tracheotomy??? Or, sometimes, there is reed grass that grows naturally. It is hollow and useful for many things. That can't be any stronger than a straw though. I'd go with the pen.

Plus, the inside of a fish's belly is going to contain the fish's lunch. Not fresh water!!

I hadn't even thought about catching the fish! LOL
I may have thought about that after reading this a few times tho! LOL

hee hee! this is such a funny thread!

If you are in the (unlikely) scenario of being on a deserted island with a fish in one hand and a straw in the other (more and more unlikely), why would the authors not just recommend eating the fish???

Since when are straws good for stabbing?

LOL My daughter can't even hit the straw on the table to remove paper without splitting it. LOL I'm not sure it would be strong enough for stabbing a fish. LOL

Yeah, gross was my first thought too. I hate fish. Is there coconut on the island? I'd drink coconut milk - that is, if I could crack it open.

My first thought was where do you get the straw from too. But then I was wondering if I am drinking the fish juice or using the fish as a "water finding devise"...... because "both" ends of the straw are in the fish, right? Or do you stick it in the eye and then the belly? And which end do you drink out of? I will have to talk to him next time I see him to straighten this out in my head!
