I wouldn't feel like eating either.

We visited Great Grandma on Mother's Day, and she's fighting off yet another case of pneumonia. She told me she doesn't have much of an appetite. Looking at the menu, I can't say I blame her. What's a steak finger?

We brought her contraband pizza and reserved a private dining room at the nursing home. She didn't touch the pizza either, but at least she had the chance to visit with us. We played Cranium and listened to Grandma's stories of mob hits back in the bootlegging days of K-town.

I had my Mother's Day lunch the day before. It was my choice so I chose Mi Cocina. I ordered a special guacamole appetizer that came in a raised stone bowl, Mayan style. It was very cool. I should have brought my camera to show you.

I told my family I'd wait for Wii Fit, but they went ahead and bought me a hanging flower basket, the new Blind Melon CD and a special 3 disc edition of Hot Fuzz. DH also brought me home roses Friday night. Yes, I'm spoiled!

Now that my fabulous Mother's Day weekend is over, its back to business.

The unschooling questions of the day:

DS12- Why do they call pee, pee?
He found out online, the English used to refer to urinating as "splashing."  Later over here it was called "pissing" because of the sound you normally hear. It became "Pee" because "Pee" was less offensive for children to use.

DS9- Why do bulls hate the color red?
We looked it up together and found out bulls are color blind. Its the movement of the cape the bulls don't like.

Good info about the bulls and the urinating slang. LOL I'll bank that knowledge for Are you Smarter than a 5th grader! LOL

The menu looks like what would be on a school menu........I used to work in a nursing home and the food was actually REAL food and good. lol This was in 1986 or so. Not sure if they have the same cooking or not.........

I would have wondered more about buttered apples than the rest.
Glad you enjoyed Mother's day.

Forgot to say I think it's great you had a nice day visiting with your G-Grandma and listening to her stories. :)

Sounds like you treasure those moments with your grandmother. :-D It also sounds like you ARE spoiled ... you deserve it! I love that you look up those questions with the boys when they have them. AND, I love that you share that info with us and help us learn something new too. :-)

Most definitely. :) I think it's cool that we can find information as we need it rather than waiting to visit the library the next day. Alex will ask something and I'll look for the answer or make a note to study it in school the following day. :)

I'm sorry...I'm still stuck at "Buttered Apples". What the -?!

I'm assuming the apples are baked with butter and possibly sugar on them. I hadn't heard of them either.

It just seems to me this menu doesn't sound very healthy. When GGMa first entered the nursing home, her doctor had her on a strict diet for her diabetes. I saw this menu and thought how could this be healthy? She's on a waiting list for a better care facility across town.

Sounds like a great Mother's Day! Good thing we got those questions all cleared up too! Love it! (My friend was just telling me about Wii Fit this morning... they are very excited about it, but no one here at this house has talked about it at all... hmmmm....)

That menu reminds me of when DH went to the hospital and they served him a piece of bread (along with his supper...not saying that sounds like they had him on water and bread lol) that was mouldy. He's extremely allergic to mold, too. : P

They may give her something else because of her diabetes. When I worked at the nursing home, substitutions on the plates were given to those with special diets.

What gets me is how expensive hospitals and nursing homes are, yet they dare serve this kind of nourishment for people who really need it to be of excellent standards!

Debbi- She got special food the first few weeks and now she's expected to eat in the dining room because they believe her diabetes is under control. My MIL brings her fresh fruit and home cooked meals most days.

Paige- That is disgusting! I realize they make anti-biotics from mold, but that was unacceptable in my opinion!

The cost of a 24 hr care facility is horrendous! That's for sure. :( I think it's great MIL brings the food to GGMa. I hope she gets into the other facility soon! :) Can she get into a personal care home? (a place where patients need minimal care, but do need 24 hr supervision) I worked in one of those and cooked. We always had really good and fresh home cooked meals.
