The birds love them too. When DS12 & I were out picking today they were chirping warnings because we were in their tree. My neighbor doesn't like Mulberry trees because the birds eat and then poop purple stains on the patio furniture. I say let the birds eat them. I'd rather have to wipe down my patio furniture and be able to view wildlife in my yard.
We actually have new Mulberry trees growing next to the house because I wasn't on top of weed control. (Thank you birds!) Now they resemble bushes and DH likes them so they're staying put. I'm hoping I can prune them to keep them from getting too large.
We don't spray the tree so I know the fruit is pesticide free. Soaking the berries in water takes care of any bugs. Maybe I'll try jam this year if we get enough. I'm off to Google Mulberry recipes!

How fun! I don't think I've ever eaten a Mulberry, but I love the idea of the wildlife (purple bird poop and all). Wonderful story, Dawn! :-D Psst...I want to see purple feet pics! LOL!
What fun it must be to have a berry tree. Going out + picking them anytime you want + knowing no pesticides. Not sure if I've ever had Mulberries. Have fun making jam!
Hope you have enough for jam, that sounds good.
i don't think I've had mulberries either, but I'd be making cobblers and jelly from em too! :)
For Lo- The photo of my feet is actually from last year. I cheated today and wore shoes. I hate getting mosquito bites on my feet. They seem to itch the worst!
I have had my first taste of them through the co op.. they are pretty tasty and wow messy lol
We have a Mulberry bush next to our house too...The berries are so sweet this year!! Hubby didn't know you could eat them until I told him. One of the dogs loves them too - she spends all her time outside eating them off the ground and trying to jump up and pick them this time of year!
We have 2 Mulberry trees in our yard, but the previous owners really let them get too big so the birds get everything sadly. This fall, I think we are going to clear the area a little better around the trees to promote growth (and maybe a few more trees/bushes). I would LOVE to have enough to pick to make something with. My grandparents' had a tree in their yard too.
FOR ME, a comparison flavor of a mulberry? Believe it or not, the first time I EVER tried Kiwi, I said, "WOW, this reminds me of a mulberry", and I hadn't had mulberry for a long time. THEN, when we moved from Florida to Tennessee, my kids had never tried mulberries until we moved to this house and they thought the tastes were similar. It may not taste like that to others, but it sure did to me. YAY, for the mulberries (now, I have to get sprayed up and pick blackberries).
I have never tried mulberries but they do sound yummy. I love Berries and someday when we get our own house we want to plant a variety of berrie's on the property. Purple Feet - Katie would love that part of it.
HA! i read this yesterday but didnt have time to respond till today and the 1st thing i was gonna post was i wanted a pic of the purple feet! i hope you get some good jam!
