I don't know anyone who lost their entire home, contents and all, but I feel for them. In the news today it is reported the village of Lake Delton did not comply with federal flood plan maps so they are not eligible for flood insurance or FEMA assistance. Click here. It seems accepting new flood maps would have made new construction in the resort area too expensive. It always comes down to the almighty dollar doesn't it.
The governor of Wisconsin has vowed the lake will be refilled. Its a major Wisconsin tourist attraction after all. Can't lose those tourism dollars!
I like my husband's plan better. He pointed out that for awhile, the empty lake itself is a tourist draw. Come see Canyon Delton! Someone just needs to set up ATV rentals and there's lots of fun to be had in the mud! Hmm... come see Tommy Barlett's mud skiers!
Seriously, the flooding has had a huge impact here in Wisconsin. There are smaller towns cut off because roads are impassable. Today they have closed down westbound HWY 94 because the Rock River is inches away from the road surface. They have parked dump trucks filled with sand in the hopes it will help the bridge survive the rushing water underneath. Sounds crazy to have heavy machines on an unstable major bridge but the idea is the weight may keep the bridge from moving. Crazy!
Tomorrow's forecast is for more rain.

This has been such a terrible thing up there! :( I feel so sorry for the communities effected.:(
I believe if expensive changes were to have been made and caused taxes to go up citizens would have raised cain over it. With high cost for construction usually comes higher costs for homes and that leads to higher property taxes. I thought anyone could get flood insurance. A friend who works for an insurance agency told me this. She said that not everyone realizes it tho.
My goodness! I've been thinking about you--how are things where you live?
Can't imagine a whole lake gone. That's terrible those people lost their homes.
So sad for those that lost part of their homes. Saw that on TV and just can't imagine what that would be like.
The news made it down here, too. The footage of that huge house just swept away by the water like a pile of matchsticks...just...wow. As much as I hate the house I last lived in over there, I hope it's still above water for my dad's sake.
I am glad we are farther north and I hope you are safe down south of us. We have been watching the news and it is so sad for those families to loose everything. And I am sure it is affecting the tourism industry in Wisconsin Dells, like the gas prices aren't bad enough.
Just got news an online friend's home in Indiana was flooded and they lost many things......It'll be awhile before they can back into the house because of the damages needing repair and the dampness...:(
