# 33 Completed!

DS has this really fun book, 101 Things To Do Before You're Old and Boring. #33 was Learn To Bake a Cake. I think he did a pretty good job! He wanted chocolate fudge frosting and DS8 was hoping for vanilla. DS12 decided to frost with both so everyone in the family would enjoy his cake.

Today we are headed to DS8's doctor's appointment for his pyogenic granuloma. We have to navigate our way around the huge UW hospital which is ALWAYS under construction. I'm anticipating a long wait, and then only 15 minutes with the doctor who will tell us to make yet another appointment at which the pyogenic granuloma will actually be removed. We've already seen our primary care doctor who referred us to the dermatologist. -Health care hoops-  I am grateful we have insurance though.

Lake Farm Park

I had to get away from stress so we took a walk at Lake Farm Park on Lake Waubesa. I get such a good vibe from the place. There are some 32 hidden archaeological sites in the park, but you can just tell people have called this area home for thousands of years. Our hike was going pretty good until DS12 heard gunshots. He was sure we were going to be victims of a hunting accident. I kept him going until we reached the end of the trail.

As we left the trail, we turned around to see a sign in orange that read, "Bow Hunting DNR permits only." OH CRAP!! I thought it was only duck hunting season and that ducks had to be shot in the air. I thought we had been safe. Where was the bow hunting sign at the other trail head where we started from?!" Note to self- BUY ORANGE HATS

My husband's great grandfather accidentally shot and killed his 12 year old son in a hunting accident. Needless to say, we are not a hunting family. But since hunting is now taking place on public land, I better learn exactly when the season starts!!

I'm crabby today.

This is not a good thing. Life is a gift. Each day I should greet with praise and thanks. I should be counting my blessings and figuring out how I can give back, but today I feel like being a hermit crab.

I want a shell to hide in. I want to be away from it. Of course whatever shell I can find won't be my own. It will be a temporary solution.

The problem is really me, not being able to accept I live in a world with many opinions, different from my own. I want to pass judgment and say, "What a waste of a human being you are! Little Man with your big gun, do you feel like God now that you've stopped a beating heart?"

I'm pissed off because people seem to me, to be heartless, self centered, greedy. I'm disgusted because I'm also one of them, "He without sin may cast the first stone..."

What I really need to do is keep going in that positive direction. Why can't I have what Anne Frank had, "Despite everything  I believe people are really good at heart.."

I need the courage to take off my shell. Leaving yourself open to feel the hurt also means you will be able to feel the good. This is better than not feeling anything at all.

Model Magic

Note to self- read package instructions

Yesterday we opened up our Crayola Model Magic packages. We discovered them on the craft shelf I have yet to organize. We decided playing with our Model Magic and Sculpty would warm us up for our real clay projects. After I opened every single pouch of Model Magic, I read that Model Magic is really a one time thing. You can't plan on saving it for later once you open that package. So we never did get around to making our real clay (kiln fired) projects.

DS8 made the "buddy" guy on the right. DS12 made Link out of Sculpty and then made him Model Magic jeans to slip into. I made a new house for Chihiro, and then DS8 had the brillant idea to mix up the Model Magic and make marbles!! We also made a few cubes with the idea we'd paint them to make dice.

Chihiro's house became part of a marble game this morning when we checked on our dried projects. You have to shoot the marbles into the hut bouncing off the cube obstacles. I'm tempted to buy more Model Magic now, and the boys can make this game to give as gifts!

I really like the effect of the swirled together MM. We had started trying to make earth marbles. Our imaginations took off, and we had all kinds of planets!

DS8 :  I still feel like sleeping.

Mom :  So go back to bed and climb under the covers.

DS8 :  It won't work.

Mom :  So just rest and enjoy your warm nest.

DS8 : But that is less time I'll have to play today.

Mom : Good point! Start playing!

You know you enjoy life when you'd rather get up and live it.

5, 10, 20 years ago...

I am stealing a blog post idea I saw on another blog.

What were you doing 5, 10, 20 years ago?

5 Years ago:
DS just turned 7, DS is almost 4. I'm living in the house I'm in now. Jones and Kita are with us. We spend our days playing and learning together- much like we still do now! I work part-time at Lands End which means I drive almost an hour each way to and from work. My shift is 6:00pm until midnight which means I get to bed sometime after 1:00am. I'm 15 pounds heavier from eating supper so late.

10 Years ago:
DS just turned 2, DS#2 isn't with us yet. We'll work on that in the months to come. We live in Cross Plains in our tiny 3 bedroom condo. I work full time as the team leader in the Fraud/Security department for a credit card processing company. DH drops DS2 off at daycare at 7:45a.m. I'm already at work by that time. I work until 4:30pm and then pick up DS2 from daycare. We make supper together and wait for DH to get home. Kitton, Jones, Kita and Kerman are with us. (4 cats!)  We live for the weekends when we can all be together!

20 Years ago:
No kids yet. I graduated from high school the year before and DH is finishing up his senior year. I'm attending Concordia College, thinking I want to become a teacher because that's what my parents told me I should be. I'm getting A's, but I only spend one semester there because I realize its costing my father a fortune, and I'm not sure what I want to do with my life. All I know is I miss my boyfriend, (DH).  I spend the second half of the school year living at home again with my parents, attending community college, trying to figure things out. I take classes to prepare me for a career in the health care industry. I discover I'm a bit freaked out looking at dead people cut open on tables for study. (Health care field isn't going to work for me either.) I'm lost and will remain so until I start listening to God's plan for me.

Other years where my life turned a different direction:

17 Years ago:
I am attacked by my mentally ill college roomate. I need to feel safe.  I return to my parent's house until I move to Madison with my fiance (DH) in 1991.

9 years ago:
I'm about to give birth to DS#2. I really, really want to stay home with him and be a SAHM! My boss offers me her job, but I want to be with my kids more.

6 years ago:
I love being with my boys so much I'm dreading sending my oldest to school. I find an online friend who homeschools. At my part time job, someone homeschools her daughter. My oldest asks why he can't just stay home and learn. The lightbulbs start going off as God puts into place these people and events. I CAN HOMESCHOOL!!

Unschooling at 7:00am

You know you're an unschooling mom when you allow your child to go outside on a chilly Wisconsin morning just after 7:00am because he wants to rake leaves. He stayed out there enjoying himself until he noticed cars parking in front of our house. Our neighbors a few streets away were bringing their children to the bus stop. They keep their children warm and snug in their cars before the bus arrives. - And here I am allowing my child to rake leaves in the frosty air? I didn't make him! He wanted to do it! There's nothing wrong with getting a little early morning exercise and fresh air!

Yes, I'm raising mob hitmen.

I told you we were going to smash our pumpkins. I think this is going to become a tradition. We tossed them, stabbed them, dropped them from a ladder, and played batter up.

It was really fun! I'm sure my neighbors thought we were nutty unschoolers once again, but do I care? NO!

The boys were really good about cleaning it up. A few seeds remain but those will disappear in a few days as the critters find them.

When we were finished, DS12 said he felt relaxed now that he had gotten out all that aggression. So I guess it was a stress release as well.

The boys figured out the pumpkins had froze a little so it was more difficult to break them. DS12 experimented with making cuts to see if that assisted in how they fell apart. They also found the moldy parts broke apart more easily.

Of course someone brought up, "What if this was your head?!" Yes, that's why we wear helmets!

Sylvester Calzone

We're watching Jurassic Park last night and during the scene where Jeff Goldblum is in the back of Jeep with the T-Rex bearing down, DS8 says, "Is that Sylvester Calzone?"

DH and I laughed so hard we couldn't breathe. I ended up with a headache, but it was worth it! Sylvester Stallone will forever be known in our house as Sylvester Calzone!

You've got to be kidding me!!

I rarely click on advertisements. My eyes are trained to avoid the annoying bars of ads, however I saw this ad and had to know more.

Would you pay hundreds of dollars for someone to help you collect and STORE your menstrual blood for the hope in the future, stem cells could be harvested from it?!!!!  Ummm... the only way I'd harvest my menstrual blood is if you PAID ME for it! I'm not about to give away my precious stem cells and then pay someone else for the privilege.

If this is for real, that someday they could harvest stem cells from your period, I hope this is set up like blood donations are. Its just not ethical to collect someone's stem cells for a profit.

Maybe in the future, women will be valued for their life giving stem cells. They will have posh spa centers where we show up once a month, vacuum out our donation and we're spared from 3-4 days of cramping and pain in the ass.

For now your option is to pay this company up to $1500 for them to send you a "collection kit" to FedEx your donation back to them for long term storage! I have no idea what this collection kit is, but I can only imagine.  (Do these FedEx drivers know what they are delivering?)  Check it out for yourself- http://www.celle.com/index.aspx

Bring it!

I want Christmas time! I know we haven't gotten through Thanksgiving yet, but I want Christmas!! Maybe I feel this way because of all the doom and gloom going on right now.  I just want peace and love to fill the planet- Baby! YEAH!

I have a goal to finish my shopping before Thanksgiving so I can spend the rest of the season baking, ringing Salvation Army bells, visiting with friends, sending cards, decorating, crafting, wrapping, singing and praising! I've been going through my recipes and collecting favorites. I've checked out several books from the library, and I'm pouring through, collecting Christmas ideas.

It helps me to get excited about Christmas season as the days grow shorter. Autumn goes by too quickly, and I'd get depressed as it got colder and darker if I didn't have Christmas spirit. Growing up, my family's Christmas season began after Turkey day, amped up at St. Lucia (Dec 13th), peaked on the 25th and lingered until the middle of January. Now that I have my own household, I say let's start November 1st and keep going until the end of January! Spending 3 months spreading love and joy helps to make the winter seem less brutal.

So today we are packing up Halloween decorations and DS8 is looking forward to smashing his pumpkin.

Investation Day

I really should be checking the public school calendar even though we do our own thing. Posse Rats rang the doorbell this morning. I'm heating up hotdogs right now. I could cop attitude that the boycave will be crazy today, but its Friday. Tonight I'm home with DH and we have lots of movies for the weekend.

He brought home from Blockbuster, Spiderman 3, Meet The Robinsons, Pulse (Japanese version),Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, 300, Night Watch, Fido, and Not Another Teen Movie. Obviously not all of these will be watched during our "Friday Family Fun Night". Can you guess which ones will? DH also wants to find time this weekend to see the Bee movie and overload on movie theater popcorn- (thanks Maija!)

Hotdogs are boiling. I'll be right back- I hope. When one enters the Boycave you never know!

I'm back. You bring them food and it gets a little scary, but I did get the standing on the couch, video game controller in hand, salute like you see in that commercial for what, pizza rolls or nuggets? How bad do you think apple juice stains?

Besides all the flicks, I do have hopes to get out and stretch my legs this weekend. I'm anxious to crunch leaves underfoot in the forest. This is my favorite time of year. I love pulling on a fleece jacket and hiking until your cheeks get rosy. Autumn moves through too quickly. Almost as fast as a tray of hotdogs in a room full of tween boys. Its time to bring them a garbage bag and see if anyone even touched the carrots.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Halloween 2007

Crab, Zombie Skateboarder and our cousin, the soccer player- Think grandma will like these?

Happy Halloween!

I had to post the boys in their costumes because they looked so good! I thought DS12 did an excellent job on his zombie makeup and even though we couldn't get the crab legs to stick out, DS8 still rocked it. Now we have way too much candy!!!!

Real life Halloween story

Wisconsin is famous for our creepiest of creeps- Ed Gein, Jeffery Dahmer. I read this news story and couldn't help but see life imitate art.  How fitting this is on Halloween, just like the movie with Jamie Lee Curtis. I feel for his family.

International Crane Foundation

From 22 to 500

Yesterday we had the pleasure of visiting the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo, WI. It was a gorgeous day and we saw gorgeous birds! We learned there are only 15 species of crane left in the world and on our North American continent, only 2 species remain, Sandhill and Whoopping.

The ICF is trying to save these amazing birds and their efforts have helped the Whoopers grow from 22 to 500. But still, that's only 500 left in the entire world!! Yikes!!! The Whoopers have a beautiful habitat at ICF. You can observe them in a natural setting. It was very peaceful and moving for me, to be looking at 2 left of 500. My photo doesn't do them justice.

Most of the other species of crane are displayed in a fenced off enclosure. (Someday they hope to build more habitats.)  As we approached each species, they would come right up to us! I was surprised to see Sandhill cranes were gray not brown. I learned in the wild, Sandhills paint themselves with mud! Before they began building more homes next to us, we'd often see Sandhill cranes grazing on the left over grain. Since the homes went up, we've haven't seen the cranes anymore.

After our field trip, we enjoyed a picnic lunch and hiking at Mirror Lake State Park with our fellow homeschooling friends.

On our way home DS8 asked, "Mom, when are we going to see the cranes?"

"WHAT!!?? We just saw the cranes at the crane center!"

"No, when are we going to see the big, tall cranes that build buildings?"

DS8 actually had a great time at ICF for the most part. He kept our tour guide busy asking her all kinds of questions. At one point I was actually embarrassed, and I had to stop myself from stopping him. I'm still de-schooling myself. I was brought up to stay quiet and listen only. DS8 still has that desire to question everything. Thankfully our tour guide, Rita, was patient!

Carving Jacks..

(Ok I can't figure out yet how to post more than one snap in a post. I tried to use photobucket but I'm getting a message I have to update and I'm too lazy right now to work through that. I'm going to just try this using Multiply.)

Except for me cutting the top off, the boys did everything themselves. In years past, I've got stuck scraping guts and making cuts. I think you can tell from the snaps, they had a great time. Give a boy a knife and how can they not have fun?!

I love the picture of Yumi reaching out her paw to claw DS12. She thinks she's being sneaky, hiding behind the curtain! LOL!

Trick or Treat!

Here is DS8 trick or treating at Great Grandma's nursing home. It was very cute. They had many of the residents lined up, circling throughout the center.  The children paraded around in their costumes, stopping at each resident to get a smile and a piece of candy.  The staff  made sure each resident had candy and there was more than enough to go around. This was our first time trick or treating this way, and I'm regretting we hadn't tried this sooner. Of course this is our first Halloween with Grandma in a nursing home, but you didn't need to have family in the home to trick or treat there. The public was invited. It was such a great idea. If you have children and need a safe place to trick or treat, look into nursing homes in your area!

Thanks for accepting my invites!

I feel like the party's about to start! Thanks to everyone who's accepted my Multiply invites. Its great to see everyone here and to make new friends as well!

Last night we had our dress rehearsal. We discovered green is not the best color choice for zombie makeup. DS12 ended up looking like The Creature from The Black Lagoon. I'm sorry I didn't get a picture before he washed it off.

DS8's Lobster/crab suit needs some adjusting on claw length. They were dragging on the ground.  He still managed to crawl through the haunted maze at our friends' Karate school party. He really looked more like a crab when he was scurrying on all fours.

I headed into town once again to find blue and gray makeup so hopefully tomorrow DS12 will be more zombie like. I promise to take pictures this time.

We plan on watching monster movies, carving our pumpkins and popping corn tonight. I love fall!

Tomorrow its road trip time to K-town to say hello to Great Grandma in our costumes and trick or treat in her town.

Thankfully my sore throat has been chased away by all the fruits and veg I've eaten along with lots of fluid and sleeping in. I feel like I've won this first battle but the war isn't over. Flu season is just getting started.

Oh! I had another bad dream last night! I was riding in a car when we hit a traffic jam. A man walked up to the car with a gun. I jumped into the back of the car and grabbed DS8 into my arms. The man moved around to the rear window which was partially rolled down. He pointed the gun at me and I begged and pleaded for him not to shoot. He ended up throwing up on me!! Gross, but hey, I wasn't shot. He became embarrassed and ran away crying. I was grateful DS8 and I were safe. Very weird huh?!

Well, I better start my crab leg alterations so I can enjoy the night time fun. Hope your weekend is going great!

Nightmare

Don't you hate when you have a nightmare and it sets the tone for your day?

I was dreaming my children were for some reason at school. (Wait it gets scarier!) An ice/snow storm of the century was blowing in, and while I had the opportunity, I wanted to find my children.

I was at the school and found DS8. I then went to a gym class to find DS12. The gym teacher yelled at me and began to punish DS12. I stopped and yelled back, "DS12, You don't have to listen to her. You are homeschooled! You can come home with me!"  When we turned to leave, I noticed DS8 was missing.

The nightmare goes on with me trying to find my children, outside in the blowing snow and sleet.  I eventually end up at home, finding DS8 hiding under DH's bed.

So you can tell I have deep seeded issues with gym teachers and unconscious fears of losing my children. What makes this nightmare linger even more is now I have a sore throat.  Not a great way to start a weekend, but I'm going to start brewing the tea and make the best of it.

My First Thursday 13 on Multiply!!

13 things occupying my mind
come on inside.....

1. I'm going through library withdrawal. Its been over 2 weeks since we've visited. We've been so busy.

2. The Posse Rats are on their way over. (No school in town for the next two days :()!!!!!  For my new Multiply friends, the "Posse Rats" are the group of neighborhood boys that hang out in our basement. Its a love/hate thing for me.

3. Why does listening to Japanese relax me? For the past 3 nights I've tried to watch a movie and I keep falling asleep. I hope I'm learning Japanese subliminally?

4. Yumi's doing very well on her diet. She is also exercising more. Why can't I be more like my cat?

5. My Christmas shopping has begun. I want to be done before December 1st so I can enjoy the season without shopping stress.

6. A great way to keep your house tidy is to invite friends over. This seems to be the only way to motivate me to clean my house!  At least I'm rewarded afterwards.

7. DS8 has a Pyogenic Granuloma. That sounds terrible but its not serious. I thought it was a mole growing on the back of his neck but it was blood red. We have to see a dermatologist, but we couldn't get an appointment until Nov 13th. They may not even remove it at that appointment. I hope we can take care of this before Christmas. Even though its nothing to worry about, he's still my baby!

8. I haven't eaten one piece of Halloween candy. HONEST! (Of course I have been sabotaging myself with hot chocolate.)

9. Wall paper may not be evil after all. You may remember when I tried to remove the wallpaper border in my kitchen. It turns out it was probably the way the previous owners pasted it. Yesterday I helped a friend remove wallpaper in her living room and we were done in less than 1 hour!! We only used water. The outer paper came off and then we simply sprayed the under layer with water. It scraped off in huge sheets. She told me she had pasted the paper decades ago and she had primed the surface after sanding the walls smooth. I couldn't believe the difference. I still will never hang wallpaper though.

10. I think I'm going to make an emergency backpack if we have to leave the house suddenly. My heart goes out to all those families in California. My gut instinct would be to grab photos and then I realized, I have uploaded most of our photos to Winkflash. I do need to scan baby photos though and get those uploaded as well. It would also take me about an hour to go through our stored paper mess to find important  documents.

11. I have to start work early today and I don't want to. Its my last night this week though so I have the weekend to look forward to.

12. I have to figure out how to make a zombie face out of oatmeal. I'm thinking we can use an oatmeal paste on DS12's face and then color it green. He's going to make fake blood too out of corn syrup and red food coloring.

13. The Posse Rat that's related to me by blood just called. I guess my "me" time is over and I better go pick him up to join the fun.

Have a great Thursday! Peace and blessings!

Mom vs. Dad style unschooling

We have been going along for years now, unschooling. Its working great. Why my DH has all of a sudden taken to giving the boys assignments is baffling me!

It started a few days ago when he asked DS12 to find out where the very first Burger King restaurant was. The next day he wanted the goods on Wendy's. Today DS12 has to report on the history of the french fry.

Inside I'm screaming, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!" As an unschooling mom, I don't give my children assignments. If they are interested in knowing who created the first french fry, I'd help them use the tools to find their answers.

I think DH may be doing this just to see if they can research and report. He is failing to realize DS12 does this everyday. He reads online and in magazines looking for gaming advice.

I also question why is fast food the hot topic? But that's really not the problem I'm having with these assignments. Of course how dare I get upset when I myself have been known to doubt the unschooling process. Although its been weeks since I've used the worksheet threat, I still worry sometimes when DS8 trips on the word, "that" but can correctly read the word, "operation."

Its natural to doubt unschooling when you were educated using the public school model. I will give my DH some slack and I'll probably ask him if he's gotten what he's wanted out of these assignments he's given the boys.  Its probably because he needs to feel involved in some way as well.

I know. Its pathetic.

This is what you get when your mom sews only once a year on a machine built before she was born. I know he looks like a lobster rather than a crab. I can't get the legs to stand out. I'm using batting and newspaper since I don't have any wire hangers. Thankfully it gets dark around here shortly after we begin trick or treating.

Monster Fest Time on AMC!!

I know we are going to watch too much TV this week, but its MONSTERFEST! The AMC network is showing horror movies now through Halloween.  I married a horror movie fan but its not my fault. I can remember being a little girl and my mother would ask on a Saturday afternoon, "Should we see if there is a monster movie on and pop some corn?" I loved to hide from the scary parts by climbing between the couch cushion and my mother's back, piggy back style. I remember she liked the classic Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney movies best.

I wasn't tramatized by a scary movie until I foolishly watched the Exorcist with my best friend Lisa. We were only 12, home alone. For two weeks I was convinced I would become possessed and I couldn't sleep.

I found out years later DH also had watched this movie when he was 12. His mom was on a business trip and he was home alone. (Relatives lived next door.) He had turned off all the lights but by that first scare, every light in the apartment was on! DH and I have told the boys this is the scariest movie on earth and they can't see it until they grow up!

I want candy!!!

My dentist appointment went very well yesterday- Thanks God!  I was prepared to do the visualization thing, but I didn't feel any pain what so ever. I was warned it could hurt, but they would rather not give me novacaine so I would be able to tell them if the crown felt good. I said a little last minute prayer and all was well, absolutely no pain. I really feel that I had indeed gave it all away to Christ at the last appointment.

For those who don't know me from 360ville, I had blogged about how after feeling anxious about having my tooth drilled, in prayer/mediation mode I saw Christ wrap a red blanket around me. When it came time for actual drilling, I could sense him tell me, "Each moment of pain passes, never to be felt again. Just give it to me." This got me through it. Knowing that each second of pain was over and I didn't have to relive it ever again really helped. I visualized myself giving away the pain, flowing from my tooth to his chest and it really worked. In fact I think it worked better than I had expected. I thought yesterday's appointment would be uncomfortable but it wasn't at all.

I thought posting this photo would be wonderfully ironic. We are getting ready to have fun on Halloween. We live in a neighborhood with lots of kids plus we get the farm families driving in. We go through at least 200 pieces every year. Its a wonderful night where all the neighbors are out walking their children door to door. People sit on porches to greet you and its very Norman Rockwell. We all look out for one another here. Its another reason why Evansville is "Heavensville" to us. We have the benefits of small town life with the convenience of not having to drive too far to experience the city.

See the giant monitor in the background. My sister got it from her work for us. It's bigger than what DS12 has now so he's excited. Of course its not a flat screen, but I like that its not going to a landfill.

Well, we're off to the Soybean fesitval! Evansville is officially the "Soybean Capitol of Wisconsin." We are building a plant to crush soybeans to make bio-fuels. The community is invited to learn more about this exciting new resource.

Have a great weekend! Peace and blessings!

Fall at the park

Lake Leota

But its fun day!!

It's Friday. Funday. At least it will be once I can get past my dentist appointment this morning. I'm scheduled for my final crown fitting. Ahh, the things a Queen must do.

To reward myself for my time in the chair of pain, I am planning on stopping at our used book store. They are offering a special teacher's discount that homeschoolers qualify for. Don't worry. My boys will be able to drag me out. (I'll be sure to kick and scream.)

Its been really stormy but the weekend looks like it will be nice. I just hope there are some leaves left on the trees to enjoy. Of course, I guess we could always enjoy them on the ground too!

I won't be able to spend all my time outdoors. I have to sew the crab suit. I will have to dust off my sewing machine which is probably as old as I am, and hope for the best. I'm ashamed to say the poor Singer only gets to play at this time of year and maybe once again around Christmas. If I had room, if I had a SEWING room, maybe I'd use it more. Having to drag it out of the box and set it up on my kitchen table takes away from the fun.

My mom has an awesome sewing room. Half of their basement is finished and she has multiple machines set up. Of course she is a quilter. It looks like a fabric store actually. Speaking of mom, I've got to call her before we head out today.

Have a great weekend!! Peace and blessings!!!

I'm still getting used to Multiply

I'm trying to keep up with posting here and posting at my 360. I'm not ready to give up my 360 yet because its familiar. Multiply isn't for me yet.

I haven't quite figured out how I can find Multiply friends like I can in 360. I really liked clicking on my favorites in my Lists and being able to find others who enjoy the same things. For now, I've been trying to find Multiply friends through other friends.

I also have to figure something out regarding the email updates I receive in my Yahoo mailbox. It seems I'm getting quite a bit of mail even though I have very few friends right now. I'm sure there must be a way to fix this. I thought I had asked for only daily updates, but I get those in addition to each and every individual update or post. I like how on 360 I just go to my "Home" page and I can see all my friends'  updates.

I also miss playing with my avatar. Multiply won't support "Twinky" with the browser I use.

I guess I have to be patient and I'll figure it all out sooner or later.

Are you kidding me!!

I just have to vent. Every now and then I'm reminded how many morons they are. I work at a swimming school. A few weeks ago we began our fall session. One of our teachers taught 2 classes and then called in sick. With a doctor's ok note, she came back to work for a few more classes, then one day she didn't show up- no phone call. We couldn't reach her for 3 days and we were legitimately concerned for her. We eventually had no choice but to replace her. When you are dealing with young children, you need reliability and consistency!

Last night she called me at work and asked if she could pick up her paycheck. I told her I didn't see a check for her, but if she wanted to stop by, I'd look in the boss's office. The boss came in and I told her this ex-employee was stopping by for her check. My boss wanted to speak with her before giving her last paycheck. She wanted an explanation as to why she completely ditched us along with all her young students. Well Moron girl never showed. She probably saw Ms. Boss lady's car in the parking lot.

As soon as the boss left, in walks Moron girl. I told her she had to make an appointment to pick up her last paycheck with the owner (boss). She freaked out saying, "She can't do that! Everyone else is getting paid! I need that money to pay bills!!" I wanted to remind her all our other instructors haven't walked out on their students and if she needed to pay bills, maybe she should have tried to keep her job! I kept my mouth shut and simply told her, "If you want your check, call K.."

I realize we all make mistakes, especially when we are young, but this girl had no clue. Maybe my boss shouldn't have held her check like that, but she deserves an explanation.

Christmas Trees

Getting ready for Halloween

Halloween is coming and I have to start sewing. I'm not really good at sewing, but I give it my best try this time of year. DS8 wants to be a crab this year. DS12 hasn't yet decided what to dress up as. Last year I made this Whoopee Cushion costume and it was a big hit. I saw a picture in a catalog and just winged it, without a pattern. Here in WI it helps to have costumes that fit over winter jackets!

Something new

Multiply... Hmm... A new place for blog fun? Thanks to Tiina for introducing me. We'll see how this goes. I've been through Blogger and Yahoo360. I'm not sure if I'm ready to leave 360 yet, but I can't resist trying new things. So far this seems pretty easy but I may miss playing dress up with my avatar. Plus, I wonder if my 360 friends will follow and how many new friends I'll make over here.

My unschooling helpers

I still am possessed with strep. We haven't been doing much because of these drug resistant annoyances. I'm now taking 9 pills a day for the next 10 days and if this doesn't work, its specialist time. The boys have really been doing more on their own. We've stayed home, which they prefer, and we try to take it easy for my sake. I haven't been reading out loud, and I haven't been trying to introduce new things, but I know they are still learning. DS7.10 stunned me the other day when he read the words, "Classic Boxing". He was trying to find something on TV to watch. I didn't expect him to be able to read those kinds of words yet. I guess he can. He also told me he figured out 4, 8's equal 32. I guess he's ready for multiplication. Learning never stops, even if your mom has strep for a month!

Be careful what you ask

Ok, I'm probably not feeling well emotionally so this may have been a bad time to survey my children. I had wanted to ask them questions and then years down the road, I thought it would be fun to read what their answers were when they were at this age. I asked them for their favorites and least favorites. I asked them also what they thought they would be doing in 5 years and what they'd be when they grew up. Now I'm questioning whether I'm giving my children what they need to develop a healthy desire for success. Or maybe more accurately, I'm realizing my dreams for them, are not the dreams they have for themselves!

DS11 wants an "easy" job. He doesn't want to go to college. (That's actually ok with me. I'd rather he go to tech school.) In 5 years, he'll be "delivering mail or helping the librarian." When he grows up, he wants to "be a baker or a builder of houses." He also threw in video game designer. No surprise there. I thought he'd be an accountant because of his gifted number aptitude. I could actually see him being a carpenter. He really likes to build things and he could use his math talents.

DS7.10 wants to be a judge or a food critic. Actually, I think he'd make an excellent lawyer. He is very strong willed and will tell you its black when you know its white. He isn't very easily persuaded so I don't know if this would make a good judge or not. As for food critic, he is such a picky eater now, he'll only eat a few different foods. How could he be a food critic! DH thinks DS7.10 would make a good Pastor. This shocked me because DS7.10 doesn't show his sensitivity outwardly. I always thought, or hoped for, DS7.10 to be an auto mechanic. He used to be into cars and trucks and we need a good trustworthy auto mechanic in the family!

I know I shouldn't get too worked up about this. DH was going to be a truck driver with a shark tank in the back of the trailer. I remember wanting to be a teacher and in a way, I guess I am. Who knows what the Lord has planned for them? I just have to remember they have their own dreams.

Oh yeah, I have a blog here...

I've been busy playing over on Yahoo 360. I can't help it if they make it more fun and easy to connect with others.

For those of you too shy to venture over to My Other Blog, here's what we've been up to. It hasn't all been rosy.

On October 30th, DH entered into indentured slavery. He is trapped on a sinking ship. There is too much work and not enough workers. He is sacrificing to try and keep the paycheck coming. Pray for him with us. He hasn't had a day off since the 30th.

The boys are doing great despite the lack of family time we've had. Amazingly they still have trick or treat candy left and teeth still in their mouths.

I made a deal with DS11 that I won't give him spelling tests if he promises to use spellcheck. This is how I learned how to spell. I spent years in the public school system excelling at most subjects except spelling. Once I began using a keyboard and having the words highlight when I mispelled them, it all clicked. DS11 is spending more time on the computer these days.

Yumi had her operation. She was away for 25 hours but we missed her so much! I think they fell in love with her at the vet too. She returned to us like nothing had happened. Her belly is still naked, but she's stopped licking her incision.

I tried to start our holiday enjoyment by making cinnamon applesauce ornaments. They didn't work out. (Thanks a lot Martha!) I have started to get our house season ready by cleaning and clearing out. It feels good to purge and simplify.

Next week we are hosting a HEARTS party. The kids are collecting books for a family shelter and school supplies for a school in Kabul, Afganistan. Sadly, our turnout will be low. I'm trying to see past this and realize how important it is for even one person to give of their time. I want the boys to learn how rewarding volunteering can be.

Well, that's about all my sore throat will allow me right now. Time for another cup of Elderberry Tea.

Stop me if I get this way...

I told DS11 to tell me if I get this way. Yesterday I witnessed a mother IMO, disrespecting her son. She had arrived early for his lesson so she told him to wait alone while she ran to the store. I thought this was harsh. She could have spent those 15 minutes with her son, enjoying his company. She could have ran her errand after his class began. When she returned at the end of the lesson, she opened the door to the men's locker room and started yelling at him to come out now. The poor kid just got out of the water and needed to change! This young man was probably 13? I felt embarrassed for him. When he came out, he was clearly upset. Her schedule was more important to her I guess. I told my son, if I ever get that way, say something! I don't want to be the kind of parent who forgets my child is a human being with feelings, worthy of my respect.

I can try to see this event from the mother's point of view. She probably had tons to do, places to get to. But perhaps she could have better managed her time, or at least laid out her expectations for her son to comply with her schedule. She seemed so rushed. I felt sorry for her. Her stress was also causing stress for her son, effecting their relationship.

I hope I can remember when I'm stressed, to slow down and remember what's really important.

Do I really care?

On one of my homeschooling groups, there is a buzz about an upcoming Dr. Phil show where he slams unschooling/homeschooling. I don't usually watch Dr. Phil and I probably won't watch his show on unschooling. Yesterday though, I did watch a few minutes while on the treadmill. He has this "Dr. Phil house" and he chose the following people to live together; a white supremist, a black woman who hates white people, a thin person who hates fat people, a fat man who hates thin people, a gay person who hates straights, a straight who hates gays, etc. The camera follows their every move. Its so unethical its not funny. Dr. Phil watches the footage and makes comments about the people's behavior. It creates such an unhealthy environment for these people, I can't see how any healing can take place. Dr. Phil obviously wanted to exploit these people. You probably watch more Dr. Phil than I do, but I've seen enough. I'm sure his anti-homeschooling show will be more biased BS.

The truth is I don't care what other people think of my family's lifestyle. I know my children are learning and growing wonderfully. One day they will go out into the world and they will demonstrate their strengths.

I'm so proud of my cub!

I know unschooling is working. DS11 has been enjoying an online game and last night he had a devastating defeat. He had his low moment, taking time to feel and express his disappointment. This morning he got back up on the horse. He began researching online to solve his dilema. Then he developed a plan to test his solution, taking care to protect his assets. It's important for him to know his solution will work and be the best for the situation. He has demonstrated how to use curiosity with caution. I know he has become a problem solver. He overcame a tragic event in his eyes, and decided not to give up. And all of this I learned from watching him play an online virtual role playing game.

The weekend can't come soon enough.

Yesterday we spent all afternoon away from home, enjoying a homeschool gym class and art time with some friends. I introduced the group to Artist Trading Cards and it seemed like everyone liked the idea. After art class is was time for me to run to work, so needless to say, my house isn't getting much attention. Today I was going to catch up, but the only thing that got cleaned was the van, and I wasn't responsible for that. The boys did that for me. I woke up with a touch of something intestinal. I'll spare you the details, but I'm feeling weak and drained. I have to work again tonight so I'm trying to rest up. The boys are keeping busy playing Legos, chess and wiping their noses. (They have colds.) I hope tomorrow we'll all wake up feeling better and kick things into high gear. Maybe the sun will come out too. Hmm, time to find one of my favorite Beatles Songs. I think that will pick me up.

An unschooly day

I love autumn and I love being home to enjoy it. Today we chose to play chess, and carve virtual pumpkins in preparation for carving the real ones closer to Halloween. We also read the first several chapters of THE END, the 13th and final book in the series of Unfortunate Events. DS11 made movies with his video camera, and we watched his old movies and marveled at how big Yumi has gotten. We called grandma to tell her about our weekend. We did crack a textbook, but the two math lessons seemed like common sense to DS11. We just looked them over while eating noodles for lunch. I actually love Mondays. We don't have to leave the house unless we want to. Its so important to take these days to follow our passions.

Questions

As a homeschooler/unschooler, I've always encouraged the boys to ask
questions. Asking questions leads to understanding. Questioning things can also bring needed changes. I've always told them, there is no bad question, but some do seem better than others. For example, yesterday these goodies were asked;

"Mom, how many colors are there?" My answer- "Infinite, I think. When you think about the many different shades you can make. Of course there are colors we can't see as well." I bought watercolor paint so we can practice mixing colors and on our
list goes the book about how our eyes see light waves.

"Mom, how much is a hundred googles?" My answer- "A lot. Actually, if you really want to know, a google is a 1 with one hundred zeros behind it. Now put two zeros behind that."

"Mom,what are the Killing Fields?" My thought- why did I leave the history channel on!! My answer- "Well, the Killing Fields were a genocide, a dark time when thousands of people were killed."

Of course often I'll answer questions with another question. I also like to keep
index cards around so we can write down the questions we don't have answers for right away.

"Mom, why does the top of Wisconsin actually belong to Michigan?" This index card question will remind me to pick up a book on Wisconsin or Michigan history.

I survived the Sleep Over!

My oldest just turned 11 and per his request, we threw a sleep over party. We've done these in the past, and after each one I swear I'm not having another. These parties usually mean 8 boys, in the basement, jacked up on cake and ice cream, playing video games all night long. The first time I tried to get them to settle into their sleeping bags, it was 10:30. I don't know what I was thinking. I sent down my husband at midnight and he rechecked them at 1:30. They were still all going strong. I couldn't make it and I passed out. My husband last checked them at 3:30am and then gave up himself. Although they were all chipper when I fed them cinnamin rolls for breakfast, I'm sure they went home and had crabby afternoons. Thankfully, I didn't receive any angry phone calls from parents. I've told myself, its just once a year.

Chewing more than I can bite

I've started another blog on Yahoo 360. I know I haven't really done too much with this blog. Why start another one? Ask DaVinci. He knew all about starting projects before others were finished. Geniuses tend to do this, don't you think?

We had a gorgeous day out in the fall sunshine. We created a Letterbox event for our homeschool friends at our local park. I just love cool, crisp fall air in my
lungs. I hated coming home to a house that still needs my attention.
The dishes, and laundry will wait right?! The Harvest Moon will be out
tonight!

Here's something else to pick you up.

Morons

I've read this morning that Republican Rep. Frank Lasee wants to arm teachers in schools with guns. I feel like I'm living in the Twilight Zone! How do these morons get elected? I know they are voted into office by fellow moronians. I just forget, now and then, how many morons I have to coexist with. I really don't understand how people can think this is a good idea. Teachers want to teach. They don't want to be prison guards. Its just another reason why I'm so thankful we homeschool.

2 times 7

"I know what 2, 7 times is mom. Its 14." DS7 announced this fact to me while I was paying for orange juice in lane 3. He was sitting on the
bench, waiting patiently. I asked him how he figured this out. He told
me he counted every other lane all the way down to lane 14. Don't you
love when they figure this stuff out like that!

No one would believe me if I told them

My son is reading the dictionary, his own choice. I was finishing up my
chocolate fix when I looked over and saw him curled up on the couch,
nose in the middle of the dictionary. I know he prefers to read
non-fiction, but the dictionary? Of course I said nothing to him and
left him to his own enjoyment. I'm sure if I had asked him to look up a
definition, he would have bawked. I'm confident taking the unschooling approach of leaving the dictionary stratgically out on the end table was the better way to go.

Recharged

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to have a night away with my husband. We very rarely get this opportunity. We attended my cousin's wedding, and it was just what we needed. Its easy to take for granted the foundation of our family,(our marriage),when we are busy with work and kids. Spending this time together without the usual distractions really renewed and recharged us. I have to make it a priority to plan more getaways for us!

Today it was back to unschooling for the boys and I. Being away from them, even for just one night, made me really grateful to be able to share so much time with them. DS7 and I read a great book, I Spy Shapes In Art by Lucy Micklethwait. She has you use famous works of art to find shapes. DS7 loves the I SPY books and Where's Waldo. This book offered him an addition benefit of reviewing great works of art. DS7 liked the Pop Art the best.

We also spent the afternoon at the park. We looked for hiding places for our Letterboxes and wrote clues. In a few weeks, we are inviting our homeschooling group to help us hunt for them. I love any good reason to be outdoors, especially on a sunny, warm fall day.

I did manage to bake some bread today too. We are trying a Ranch flavored bread because the boys love to dip everything in Ranch dressing. It smells fantastic, but we haven't tasted it yet.

I want to share one more thing today. I read this poem on a box of tea. Its written by Diane Loomans, from Full Esteem Ahead.

If I Had My Child To Raise Over Again

If I had my child to raise all over again, I'd finger paint more, and point the finger less.

I'd do less correcting, and more connecting.

I'd take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.

I would care to know less, and know to care more.

I'd take more hikes and fly more kites.

I'd stop playing serious, and seriously play.

I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars.

I'd do more hugging, and less tugging.

I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.

I'd build self-esteem first, and the house later.

I'd teach less about the love of power, and more about the power of love.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors

I really do like when my children develop a passion, but when do you question whether passion has become obession?

Both of my two cubs have gone through the usual boy passions of transporation, construction, arachnids and insects. The older offspring followed his father into a love of role playing video games, but until a few months ago, my younger son was my Uno buddy. Uno branched off into several other great card games, and I was sure I'd have a kindred soul to enjoy my love of games of the non-electric variety. Then one day, I was asked why I didn't enjoy playing video games.

As I thought about my answer, I remembered years ago, BC (before children), I enjoyed playing a video game called, "Zombies Ate My Neighbors." In the game, you run around trying to rescue people and dogs from Zombies, Werewolves, man eating plants, snakeoids, giant ants, chainsaw Texans, ooh aah dolls (think Trilogy of Terror with Karen Black), Martians, mummies and sea monsters. Your only defense to start with, is a squirt gun, but you collect other weapons such as silverware (werewolves and silver don't mix), soda pop (I guess monsters don't like carbonation), magic potions, weed whackers (good for the man eating plants), and shoes that make you run faster. The game really is quite creative as you work your way through the different levels. DH and I have always thought it would make an excellent movie.

As I recalled my joy of playing Zombies Ate My Neighbors, I wondered where this old game had gone to. I found it weeks later looking for something else. It was hidden away in the dark, unfinished part of the basement in a place I would never look for it. I presented the find to my family with great excitement. Little had I known what was yet to come of this discovery.

We hooked up the game and DS7 plugged in. He became passionate about playing. He'd work up a sweat even as he jumped around with the controller in his tight grip. To my amazement, he far surpassed my abilities in rescuing babies, cheerleaders, tourists, soldiers, and Fido. He switched from weapon to weapon, knocking down the undead left and right. DH found cheat codes online so our little Zombies Ate My Neighbors Wizard could move right through the different levels, experiencing bigger and badder monsters. Soon, he didn't use the cheat codes anymore. Then the day finally came when he mastered all 48 levels. I thought the passion would have run its course and he'd be onto the next new thing. I was wrong.

We've been here before. We feed our children's passion, making their passions our own to enjoy the experience with them. At one point in my life I could have named every Thomas the Tank engine train friend, explained how diggers and backhoes work, and amaze you with my spider trivia,(my favorite being, you are never more than 3 feet away from a spider.)

Now for awhile I re-embraced Zombies, but for me, its run its course. I keep waiting for the day DS7 will decide this game is tomorrow's news. I guess that's the hard part about letting your child follow his interests. I feel like he's seen and done everything there is to do with the game. I feel its time for him to move on and grow into another passion. I guess I have to step back and let him figure that out for himself. Its all about his timing, not mine.

Orienteering

Motivation can move you further than you know. We went Orienteering this past Saturday at a beautiful Wisconsin state park, Blue Mounds. In Orienteering you use a topographical map to navigate a course, finding markers along your path. You punch in at each marker and serious competitors like to run the course as quickly as they are able. Our family likes to take our time however, enjoying the scenery. We had hiked the same park a few weeks ago and DS7 almost didn't make it. He had tears in his eyes and his little legs wouldn't take him another step further. This time however, he was out in front for the entire duration of our hike. I think the movitation of finding the markers made it more fun for him.

DS7 has never been a huge fan of hiking despite the fact DH and I have taken him into the woods since his birth. We've been using the hobbies of Orienteering and Letterboxing to make our family hikes more enjoyable for him.

Yumi

This is Yumi. She is now 17 weeks old. She has the gift of purr. No matter how sad you feel, once she climbs onto your lap and starts to purr, your worries melt away and your heart is wrapped around her. She has taught us that love has no limits.

Getting back to our unroutine

I know its not really fall yet according to the earth's positioning, but since back to school time is here, it feels like fall. For us, back to school means back to family. While most of our neighborhood friends are attending school, we get to spend more time together, the boys and me. It feels so wonderful to have them back!

Since returning from our trip up north, we've been getting back to the "unroutine" of unschooling. Rather than follow a schedule, we simply try to fill our days with activities that interest us. Of course there are still distractions like dentist visits and my work schedule. I seem to have a huge mental list of "should do", "would like to do" and "would love to do." Its becoming a question of discipline and balance. I remind myself we need to nourish our souls and take care of our bodies. We can't do it all. We do need down time.

Its hard to allow for down time though when you know time goes by so quickly. Because of this, I find myself gravitating to the "would love to do" list. The lawn needs mowing but isn't it fun to watch our Yumi play in the grass? She won't be a kitten forever. We really should clean up and organize our bedrooms, but the sun is shining and its 70 degrees! All too soon it will be below zero and dark.

I'm the type of person who would rather live life like its our last day. The beauty of unschooling allows us to learn from this full lifestyle. I just have to let go sometimes of the doubts, walk in the grass in my barefeet, look up at the clouds and take a deep breath.

Countdown to the Road Trip

Only 3 more days until we pack the car and we're off, over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house we go! DH can't take off from work, but since I'm off while the pool is drained and resurfaced, I'm taking the boys to the north woods. I'm looking forward to getting away from our summer doorbell, but I'll miss DH tons! I wonder if the boys will go through friend withdrawal or be too distracted to notice.

I hope they enjoy exploring the woods around Grandpa's house and fishing on his boat. I hope the drive goes well. It will be a long ride for us. I'm packing the books on CD and portable DVD player.

I need this trip to reconnect with my boys. They've spent so much time playing with PS friends. When we get back, they'll have one last weekend and then school starts. That means our Heavensville Homeschool can get back to longer days rather than shorter ones. I've always viewed our homeschool being 24/7, 365 days a year. Learning doesn't just happen between the hours of 8-3:30, Monday through Friday. But our style of learning at home changes when friends are over. There's a group dynamic. When its just us, the peer pressure influence is gone and the boys have more freedom in their choices. I'm looking forward to getting back to that.

Give a Little Bit

I've recently been feeling down because of the lack of humanity on this planet. I'm going to pull myself out of it by singing this song today. I'm going to sing it all day long. Join me!

"Give A Little Bit" by Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson

Give a little bit
Give a little bit of your love to me
Give a little bit
I'll give a little bit of my love to you
See the man with the lonely eyes
Take his hand, you'll be suprised

So I'll give a little bit
I'll give a little bit of my life for you
So give a little bit
Give a little bit of your time to me
Now's the time that we need to share
So send a smile, we're on our way back home
ooh yea yea
We gotta feel it
Yea yea yea yea...
Ooo
Don't you need to feel at home
Ooo you gotta feel it
Yea you gotta want to
OO you gotta sing, we've come along way tonight

So give a little bit
Give a little bit of your love to me
I'll give a little bit
I'll give a little bit of my life for you
Now's the time we need to share
So send a smile, we're on our way back home
Yea come along too
Yea we gotta feel it
Cause I need to feel at home
Come along too
Such a long ride
oo come a long way
Such a long ride
Come a long way
Sing it tonight

Sleep, beautiful sleep...

This past weekend, we took a road trip to Grandma's and Uncle Chip's. Sleeping away from home is always a challenge for us because we are such creatures of habit. We need a fan and our own pillows and blankets, our soft mattresses, etc. We had a wonderful time visiting everyone, but we were sleep deprived.

Upon returning home, DS10 and I had to head right back out to spend the night at the hospital. DS10 needed to have a sleep study done. This was an experience I do not wish to repeat. It seemed like they had 100 wires hooked into my son. The ones on his head were glued on and in the morning had to be disolved off. In his sleep he kept pulling off the oxygen tube until they taped it to his face. I was balled up on a cot next to his bed and every time a wire came off I was awakened by them coming in to hook it back up. Niether one of us could have gotten much sleep.

Monday night I was so grateful to be back in my nest! I slept long and deep and realized what a gift a comfortable bed is.

Hi Maija!

I've just been reminded by my favorite SIL that I've neglected this blog once again. Summertime does pull me away from the computer. This isn't a bad thing however really. Here's what we've been up to since recovering from Strep throat:

Garage Sale!! We hid away from the heat in our basement going through container after container of toys. This sure did cure my "afluenza." The boys made close to $100.00 and I freed up several containers for storage. My long term goal is to bring organization to our basement.

We've also been working on a project for H.E.A.R.T.S- Homeschoolers Educating And Reaching out Through Service. We've been turning in cans for money to buy school supplies for needy families. We don't use many school supplies ourselves as unschoolers. We seem to be able to reuse what we have.

We installed a basketball hoop and we're all enjoying it. I had to convince DH to allow us to spoil him with this gift for Father's Day. He didn't want us to spend that much on him, but when I pointed out its use for "homeschool P.E", he reconsidered. It was more of a project putting together and cementing it in than I thought it was going to be, but being unschoolers we figured it out. Of course having a DH with an engineering background helped! Now the family hangs out on the driveway when dad gets home from work. I have yet to win at Horse.

Our DK (dear kitten) is quickly becoming a DC (dear cat). She is turning out to be a brute. Her favorite kitty fight club move lately is a head lock on poor old Kita. I'm feeling guilty now for exposing my senior citizen cat to a young wild thing. Kita has lost weight though which she needed to do.

As far as my soap box, I'm upset the circus is coming to town. I don't believe animals should be chained up and whipped for our entertainment. This circus even has an elephant which breaks my heart.

I'm also upset about spanking. Its the anniversary of my life changing moment at the WI State Fair. Years ago I witnessed a man beat his son at the fair and it awoke in me a desire to stop child abuse. Last week I witnessed a mother spank her naked daughter's butt because she wouldn't put on her swimsuit. It broke my heart. I'm ready for an anti-spanking law.

Many people say child abuse education is the key, not laws. I've been asked, "As a homeschooler, how can you say you want the government making parenting decisions for you?" The way I see it, education and child abuse are two separate things. Law currently prohibits us from spanking the obnoxious person in front of us. You'd be arrested and made to register as a sex offender if you spanked anyone under the age of 18, unless of course, they are on your tax return.

Parents have the right to establish their own discipline, but slapping your kid across the face or the butt is not discipline. I'm so sick of Right Wingers trying to use the Bible to justify it. They need to learn Hebrew and learn the true definition of "the rod."

As a Christian myself, I prayed about how to help my DS behave. He was strong willed and time outs didn't seem to phase him. After prayer, God didn't lead me to spank him. God told me to give my son a mission, a job, a responsibility. Redirection really does work. DS went from troublemaker toddler to responsible helper. He thrived on the direction and it gave him self esteem.

Well, I suppose this is plenty of blogging for now. I'll get down from the soap box and actually pick up a literal box of soap to wash clothes. Peace and blessings!
