Friday Five 1/14/11

"Since this is National Thank You month, and so many times little things, like how much we appreciate people can go by and we just don't get them said.  Let's take today and thank at least 5 of those people.  And then once you are done here, maybe spread some of that around to others as well!?  Everyone would love to hear a thank you, an I appreciate you, an I love you...just because we think they know that...it still doesn't hurt to hear it!" ~ Friday Five Group Prompt

1. I'm grateful I found my heavenly Father, not in the church, but in my heart. I'm grateful He led me away from the misinterpretations of others, and He helped me understand the truth about his love.

2. I'm grateful to my husband, my best friend, my soul one. I know we have something rare, and I cherish it. I can't imagine my life without him.

3. I'm grateful to my sons. They are a gift. They have taught me more about love than I thought possible and have made me a better person by allowing me to become a parent.

4. I'm grateful to have extended family. Good times and bad, they helped shape me, and when needed most, I do believe they will be there for me.

5. I'm grateful for all of my friends. I can wrap my arms around some of them, and some I can't,  but they all count and are dear to me.

Friday Five 1/7/11

"Good morning all of you FF'ers! Let's start the New Year off with thinking of others!

January is National Blood Donation Month so why don't you tell us 5 things that you donate for the help of others.  Now this doesn't have to be something huge...if you are a grandparent and you babysit for your grandchildren while their parents work...in these hard economic times that is a HUGE help for parents trying to make ends meet!  A friend of mine is doing a Pay-it-forward for her New Years resolution...so it just got me thinking...what can I do this year to help more people. Give us your giving ways and lets all start this year out with our hearts!  If you are someone who has new ideas for this coming year, tell us your 5 resolutions to give in the New Year...or if you are someone who (as I had been in the past while raising 3 kids) maybe this 5 can allow you to stop and think of ways you can start this year as a giving year...just let us know your thoughts!"

http://fridayfivegroup.multiply.com/

Here's my 5.

1. I'll start with the easiest donation and probably the best, my prayers. Prayer is also the perfect donation for when you don't have anything else to give or when you feel helpless. It can be done on the spot, where ever you are, and can take just a few moments of heartfelt thought.

2. Goodwill - This donation really is doing me a favor. I feel so much better after purging away clutter. I also appreciate how the Goodwill organization near me is trying to train people for jobs, something in our area that is very difficult to come by.

3. I'm a Bell Ringer for the Salvation Army. I do this in memory of my immigrant grandparents who were helped out by this organization when they first came to this country and when they struggled through the depression. Its also fun and helps get me in the Christmas spirit of giving being witness to so many people dropping money into the buckets.

4. I help both "light the tree" and "light the night" in an effort to stop cancer. Unfortunately, next Christmas I'll have more white lights on our community's memory tree, having lost more friends and family to this evil disease.

5. I feed the neighborhood posse and provide a safe place for them to hang out, away from drugs and alcohol. All through the years, we've opened up our home to the boys' friends, letting them know they are always welcome. Our Game Cave is a neighborhood favorite, plus I benefit from getting to know the friends of my children.

And here are 5 more I want to start in 2011!

1. Meals on Wheels
2. Our local Care Closet - its both a second hand goods store and a food pantry for our village
3. Child abuse prevention
4. Restoring our parks and creating walking paths
5. My neighbors - I know my neighbor across the street, having just lost his wife, will need more TLC visits and I'd love to bake up a little more friendship for all of my neighbors.

Friday Five 12/10/10

"For this Friday let's read about five of your favorite things to do with Christmas...with a twist....you know me I like to do that....I mean who of you would've thought you'd find a word search here last week! LOL Ok so Five of you favorite things...here's how it works ...1. A Food  2. A Song  3. A Movie 4. A Tradition 5. A Gift" - Friday Five Group

1. FOOD - Cookies :) Christmas wouldn't be the same without them. This year we're making soft gingerbread, spritz and rum balls. I miss my grandmother's pepparkakor cookies. I wish I knew how she made them so thin!

2. SONG - I've actually been avoiding those radio stations playing nothing but Christmas carols this year, but I am enjoying Sarah McLachlan's version of Joni Mitchell's River.

3. MOVIE - The Polar Express - I associate this movie with my children. They always enjoy watching it several times during the season.

4. TRADITION - Getting together with family - Beginning with my childhood and continuing now, Christmas time has always been about family. I loved going over to cousins' houses, playing on beds piled high with coats, eating Swedish cookies, hearing laughter and sharing the warmth of the season.

5. GIFT - Now that I have children of my own, its definitely more fun giving than receiving. My gift is their joy.

Friday Five 11/19/10

Good Morning Fivers!!! Our hostess is having a little surgery and she asked me to fill in this week ...so here we go...it's almost Turkey time for most of us here ...RU excited??? Gosh the holiday season is here....of course I kind of think it really starts with Halloween but when you go in the grocery store and start seeing big ol' displays of oil for frying turkeys and stacks of flour, sugar, and cake mixes..lol...you know it's getting close!! So this week fivers let's talk Turkey....tell us five of dishes that grace your table on Turkey day...past or present. Remember to post your link here so we can all have a look and see what's cooking at your house this year! Have a wonderful Friday ...happy Fiving...Be blessed...Loveyameanit..Queenie

1. Stuffing, known by some as "dressing" - To me this is the best dish on the table. This year I'm trying a recipe with dried cranberries and granny smith apples in it. How can it not be yummy?!

2. Sweet potatoes with pecan topping - A few years ago, my mother in law shared the best recipe for sweet potatoes with me. It has a corn flake, pecan and brown sugar topping that's way better than any marshmallow monstrosity. Its now become our traditional way we enjoy sweet potatoes on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

3. Corn - Simple and sweet, we always use frozen, never canned.

4. Garlic mashed potatoes - I always leave the skins on for added nutrition.

5. Gravy - This is a must have on Thanksgiving. On the turkey, on the potatoes, on the stuffing, its all good!

Friday Five

"For this week I have been thinking...with all the holidays coming up, and just every day stress...what 5 things do you do JUST for you, to help you relax, unwind, destress when you have had enough tension and just need a break?" ~ Friday Five

 http://fridayfivegroup.multiply.com/

Here's my 5.

1. I day dream I'm in an alternative universe creating the perfect world for me. It helps me to think in another reality, I'm living stress free. :)

2. Chocolate - in any form

3. I open up a window to the world, otherwise known as an internet browser and satisfy my autodidact cravings.

4. I change the scenery. Either physically moving myself elsewhere, or moving what's around me.

5. I make him, make me laugh. Everyone needs a humor hero in their lives.

Friday Five - Halloween Costumes

"So! Let's go! This week's challenge is to list 5 of your favorite ways to dress up for Halloween. You could list your favorite costumes from when you were a trick-or-treater, or you could list ways you would like to dress up today (if you didn't think the little brat from next door would laugh at you). In either case, have fun!"

1. I remember my mother loved to make costumes out of felt. One year I was a caterpillar and  won a costume contest.

2. My mom once tried to make me a tomato, but the left over red fabric she used had little tiny white dots on it. Everyone thought I was more of a strawberry. I remember being self conscious anyway because the costume was stuffed to plumb me out.

3. I did the 80's punk rock look with my best friend. Trick or treating in heels I can't recommend.

4. Hobo- Doesn't every kid trick or treat in this costume at least once? Its the classic, I want candy, but I don't want to put together a costume trick.

5. Princess - This was the store bought costume I just had to have one year. For some twisted reason, it came with a plastic mask, fully decked out with makeup and fake blond hair and tiara. Common sense would be to apply real makeup to your child, but instead this came with a fake princess face. I remember the mask getting bumped on my head while trying to go through a haunted house. I couldn't see a thing.

Friday Five 8/13/10 - Scary Movies!

"Ooooooooh, scary!  For Friday the Thirteenth, tell us about your five favorite scary movies.  (Count a series as a single movie if you're going to play fair.)  And don't forget to come back and post your link."

1. The Exorcist (the original with Linda Blair)- No contest. This movie terrified me to my core. I foolishly watched it at age 12, with my best friend Lisa, while the two of us were ALONE in her house. I did not sleep for 2 weeks thinking I was going to become possessed by the devil. Years later I found out my husband had a similar experience with this movie, seeing it at the same age, only he was COMPLETELY alone while his mom was out of town on business.

2. Pulse - The Japanese version. I had to hold my son's hand while we watched this late one night. Japanese horror films have that extra element of creepy that I haven't found in American horror.

3. Suspiria - The Dario Argento classic. The first 5 minutes are genius, and the rest of the movie never disappoints.

4. Let The Right One In - I feel the need to have a vampire movie on this list, and this one is truly one of the best vampire movies ever made.

5. I'm at #5 already?? So many good films still to choose from.....Since its so hot and humid outside, I'll go with Stanley Kubrick's, The Shining. I could use a run through a frozen hedge maze right about now.

Friday Five- 7/30/10

I need to distract myself from my stress right now. This Friday 5 will relax me thinking of my garden.

"I've just been outside and picked a whole pail full of green beans!  This is the first crop and I know by the time the plants finally keel over we'll be sick and tired of them.....but for now, they are going to taste mighty fine!  So these green beans got me to thinking about all us human beans and the veggies we like to plant and how happy we are when we can harvest them.....and voila!  Another Friday 5 is born!  Give me a list of 5 garden fresh veggies you enjoy and how you like to prepare them.

Don't forget to leave your link so everyone can play along!  Happy Five-ing!
"

1. Roma tomatoes - My favorite tomato because along with good raw eating, they make great sauce. I'm hoping this year's harvest is as big as last years so I can savor that sweet taste of fresh tomato sauce all winter long. There's nothing like opening a jar of homemade sauce in January and being able to taste summer like that. The sauce I make and freeze, tastes so much better than store bought.

2. Sugar Snap Peas - Otherwise known as candy from the garden. I'm having a little difficulty growing these this year, but we've enjoyed a few handfuls. I planted a second crop and oddly only half the seeds have sprouted. Next year hopefully I'll have better seed.

3. Butternut squash - I love how well these keep in a cool, dark place, all winter and spring long. I still have squash left to eat from last year that are still good. I love to make butternut squash soup with apples too. Last year we grew our Butternut squash vertically using a frame and old pantyhose slings. This year we're keeping the plants on the ground and hoping for the best.

4. Watermelon - We're Melonheads. Of course we always try to grow a few melons each season, although in our zone, this is a challenge. If I can ever find a clear, Plexiglas box, I'd love to try and grow square watermelon like they do for Japanese supermarkets.

5. Carrots - Our first time with carrots. They are a smaller variety but still make for good eating. They take too long to grow though.

Friday Five- 6/25/10 Five Sounds Of Summer

Wow! This month has just flown away in a big ol' hurry.....I've really had a good time fiving with you each Friday...and before I pass the baton to the Donut Lady I will ...if you'll allow me...take my final bow until we meet again for another five....We've smiled, listed things that stood out for us....and partied by the pool...this week let's list Five Sounds of Summer!!! All right now put on your thinking caps for this one! Thank you for playing our game each week...I loveyouallandmean it...Love, Queenie     PS As always leave your link so we can read what you hear in the summer!

1. Birds- Baby birds are squawking away for mama and papa birds to feed them. I find it very interesting to watch them bounce around the yard demanding to be fed. We always know when the sun's about to come up too, because the chirps get loud outside our bedroom window.

2. Crickets- I love the sound of crickets. I find it very relaxing. Did you know their rhythm depends on the temperature? My mother always told me a cricket found in the house was a sign of good luck.

3. Children playing- Whether its my own or the neighborhood kids, its great to hear outside games being enjoyed.

4. Lawn mowing- This one I don't enjoy. I think lawns are over rated. They use up too much water and mowing pollutes the air.  A veggie garden is better because you don't have mow it and it gives you nutrition in return for watering it. I wish my neighbors could all coordinate when we mow our lawns so we didn't have to listen to the constant buzzing all day long.

5. Thunder- I love a good thunder storm. Summer storms bring great sky shows too.

5 for Friday - 6/11/10

"This week I bet you can name Five things that have happened recently either in the news or in your lives that stand out for you in some way...they touch your heart, make you want to throw a fist in the air and go "YES", or maybe just leave you feeling thoughtful."

1. A job offer for DH after 8 plus months of unemployment! Its only a limited term contract position, but still, it will help us catch up and give him something to do while we continue to look for something permanent. Who knows, maybe this company will even decide to hire him after the contract expires. We're going to miss having him around the Sleepyhouse, but with nearing the end of unemployment benefits, this is a huge blessing to us right now.

2. New work projects for me! After attending a "webinar", I've learned a bit more about our scheduling software. I'm looking forward to using my new knowledge to improve our scheduling management system at the pool I work at.

3. After living in our Sleepyhouse for almost 9 years, we have finally cleaned out our gutters thanks to DMIL and her awesome ladder and hose attachment. 6 tennis balls, a football and a few shuttlecocks- its a safe bet our gutters will now work much better after clearing all that out! But how will I collect rainwater for our containers now? Hmmm..maybe we'll be able to afford the materials to make a real rain barrel?

4. I can walk 3 miles in a workout! Since I began Dailymile a few weeks ago, my goal was to be able to walk 3 miles a day. I've been able to walk 3 miles and soon I'm hoping I can manage that distance on a daily basis. I feel so much better when I have the opportunity to walk off the stress.

5. The first harvest from the square foot garden is ready! I'm planning on picking the baby spinach and other early lettuce, adding some strawberries and having a fabulous salad!

Friday Five- Holding a Grudge

I really am a forgiving, patient person, but if I examine myself closer, I can come up with a few grudges.

1. There is a family we have been generous with who only ended up taking advantage of us. Not that we expected our acts of generosity to be reciprocated, or even appreciated, but when all they would return to us was disrespect, we knew it was time to distance ourselves.

2. I will not shop at Woodman's. I don't care if it is employee owned. I was waiting in line to pick up my developed film. In the check out area was a basket full of Tootsie Pops. Having two little boys in tow, of course they wanted a Tootsie Pop. I picked up the candy and waited my turn in line. When it was my turn to pay, MR. RUDE, refused to ring up the candy saying this was the photo line only. He required me to pay for the photos and then get in a different line, in another area of the store, to pay for the tootsie pops. WHY THEN HAVE THE CANDY IN THE PHOTO AREA IF YOU CAN'T PAY FOR IT THERE!!! I have never shopped at Woodmans since and never will.

3. An extended family member once treated my son very poorly. Its very difficult to forgive those who have wronged your children.

4. I was nine months pregnant, working in corporate hell. We had an employee of the week reward allowing you to park close to the door to the building. I had won the previous week's reward, and the next woman to win was a bus rider and didn't need a parking space. She offered to allow me to park there another week, seeing I was overdue and having a difficult time waddling into work. One day after her kindness, security stopped me and made me move my car. It did not matter even after the woman tried to explain to security she wanted me to be able to use the spot in place of her. The parking spot sat empty the rest of the week. I left work after my son was born and never went back.

5. Anne - She knew we were a couple. She seduced him anyway. Of course, it does take two. His betrayal was just as hurtful to me, if not more so. It took an act of God, literally, to help me find forgiveness. The Lord helped me through it and today I understand why. Maybe this truly isn't a grudge I hold anymore, since I've forgiven them both, but whenever I hear of someone cheating on someone else, it strikes a chord. I will never be a Brangelina, Tiger Woods or Jesse James fan. Infidelity seems to be a greater sin to me than a few others.
