We came across this tree on the trail and for the rest of the hike, we enjoyed making up stories about a giant wood pecker we've named the "Death Pecker." We had the park pretty much to ourselves so it was fun to laugh and dream up funny scary stories of how we could possibly come to our demise at the beak of the Death Pecker!
Thankfully, we survived and we live to hike again! I may just have to carve a Death Pecker Letterbox and plant it in this park.
Today's hike was one of those rare moments where we drop everything and head to the woods just because we can. We don't get too many good weather days, so we need to take advantage of them when they're here. Plus the beauty of unschooling is we can take learning and creativity with us, wherever we go. I doubt we would have been inspired to create the legend of the Death Pecker if we had stayed in the Sleepyhouse. We needed to be in the woods and see this gorgeous dead tree.

What fun!! I love the way you approach learning for your kids. Thanks for sharing the adventure with us, Dawn.
Sounds like an amazing adventure with your kids.
Sounds like a great time. Our local hiking trail is closed + we are impatiently waiting for it to reopen. I miss the woods. Hope you get more great weather this week!
What a fun adventure!! I always enjoy reading your blogs and what you share with us!!! Hope your day will be super today! Hugs to you!!
Great adventure and its funny how even dead trees make a beautiful picture.
What a great adventure with the boys and on such a gorgeous day!!! I think your Death Pecker is really a Pileated Woodpecker. They are an awesome, prehistoric looking woodpecker, and the largest woodpecker to reside in WI. Your nickname is very fitting!
Awesome picture and one busy woodpecker, or I mean death pecker, LOL. Sounds like you had an awesome time on your hike.
I agree. Although we didn't see any on our hike, we met an awesome looking Pileated woodpecker at my parent's house. Their size is striking and colors inspiring. Every time he visits my parent's woods, their pet cockatiel squawks like he's terrified he'll be pecked next.
