Yesterday we visited the Chazen Museum of Art. The museum has been in the news lately because of a controversial sculpture of two goats, embraced and kissing. What upsets some people is these goats are both male and their privates parts are, well... at attention.
My family didn't see what the big deal was. Frankly, we found the sculpture silly. There were many other pieces in the museum that were much more interesting.
The photography work of Filip Dujardin was inspiring. He alters true photographs of buildings to create new, imaginative buildings, although they would be impossible to build from an engineering standpoint.
I liked Ferrari's Madonna and Child because it portrayed Jesus about to nurse from Mary. With all the controversy on Facebook about photographs of breastfeeding, I loved how in 1525 it was no big deal.
DS11 liked Gleizes' Schoolboy. I guess I should take him to see some Picasso next.
I wish we could visit more art museums. We can't afford to travel and big city museums charge expensive admission. We have plenty of art books, but it can't replace seeing a piece of work in person.

Nice web-site, and I am always happy to hear about museum visits! The controversy over the sculpture you mentioned hasn't made it down here to Florida yet, but it doesn't surprise me to hear about it. Because we tour 5th graders, we have to always be careful about exhibits that include nudes or body parts. Kind of silly when you think of the old masters - as you mentioned. We did an exhibit of Picasso ceramics a year or so ago. Prior to that, I didn't even realize Picasso did ceramics. Museums are awesome, and most of them have free days/times.
Sounds like the perfect day, glad the family enjoyed.
Sounds like everyone had a great time. Hubby has been wanting to go to the art museum in Philly. I hate going to Philly. Yuck! But now he has to go for school homework so I guess we'll be going to it soon. Have a great day!
Nudity has never bothered me. I can remember introducing my son to the statue of David when he was little and he did say, "He doesn't have clothes on!" It doesn't make me uncomfortable to show them artwork with nudity. Its the choices people sometimes make with their bodies that may bring about obscenity.
I agree with you completely, Dawn. Unfortunately, there are some parents, and even teachers, who just don't want to deal with it. The human body is beautiful and should not be viewed as "dirty" or "obscene". It is how it is presented that can cause problems.
