Grandpa P and Cheryl stayed over for a quick visit. Grandpa P treated us to supper out at Old Country Buffet. He sure doesn't show it, but he loves to eat. I wish I had half of his metabolism. We hope to some day be able to travel down and visit them in Florida. Maybe Grandpa will even give us a ride on his Harley!
We're getting ready to put the garden to bed. We harvested a third bucket of Roma tomatoes, but I think they will start to thin out now. We did end up with blight at the end of the growing season. We had heard it was in our area, but since we had started our plants from seed, we hoped we'd be spared. Apparently blight is an airborne disease for tomatoes. Now I'm not sure how we should clean up the bed. I've heard you do not want to compost plants affected with blight. You are suppose to bag them up and throw them away. I just wonder if the soil needs to be treated?
We didn't get as many butternuts as I had hoped. Next year we will position the plants better and ditch the vertical frame idea. Although we did end up with nice fruit, we had a few too many cool nights and the vines growing on the vertical frame got too chilly. The vines on the ground fared better.
Our watermelons and cantaloupes don't look ready. I'm afraid we didn't have a hot enough summer to bring them to maturity. We'll wait a little while longer and see if any ripen up.
Over all the Square Foot Garden method is a great idea for beginning gardeners, but next season I think we'll experiment with something different. We want to grow bigger and better!

Glad you had a nice visit and they will leaving with lots of memories + germs. lol
Well at least you got lots of tomatoes. They are my fave.
Glad everyone is feeling better. Have a great day!
Glad the boys are recovering - they are so darn cute!! Great photo! I am not a gardener, so don't have any advice for you about compost, blight or treating soil... Thanks for the update! Have a good week.
Glad everybody is feeling better. That virus is a tough one to get rid of. Took me 3 weeks. Glad you had a great time with the family.
Glad to hear they are getting better, its been a nasty virus in our house too.
I know you mentioned about blight before and I asked my neighbor John about it, he is very knowlegeable about gardening/farming. He said you do have to throw away any infected plants and plants around them than treat the soil with a fungicide. He said its best to go to your local garden center or farm and garden type store and ask which product would work for you garden. There are many organic ones also. He also said to rotate your crops next year and don't plant tomatoes back in the same spot, he also recommends lots of compost.
Cindy-Thanks for asking your neighbor! The online research I did basically said the same thing. It is discouraging to know blight is air borne. I just hope we don't go to all the trouble to try and remove it and it comes back anyway from a neighbor's untreated garden.
Florence- DS 13 has had it for 4 weeks. I think he's finally improving for good now, instead of yo yo-ing back and forth.
Thanks for all the well wishes friends!
You're always up to a lot and I enjoy coming by to read your news.
Recently I've just been quite busy but it all should settle down bit by bit now when I'm getting the work and studis going (or have already) and will have no one to train at work next week.
Doesn't it feel a little sad that winter's on its way and it will kill all the flowers and plants. I already dream of planting something on my balcony next spring... darn, it's still some months until then!
We have a good apple year this year. A colleague asked me if I'd like to go and pick apples in her back yard. She said they have so many of them that she gets lost with all of them. I'll be glad to go and bake something. Apple bakings are very tasty and also apple juice would be really much yum.
Take care Dawn! I hope you have a good week going!
