Wednesday's babble

Out with the old, in with the new. Really, I don't know what was wrong with our old town sign, but our village has spent the money to erect a newer one. Except for needing some weeding, the old sign seems fine to me. One of these days I really should become more active in my local government.

Have you read this article about the FTC monitoring blogs? I read this a few days ago, and it really concerns me. How can this not be a violation of free speech? The FTC is concerned that some bloggers are receiving free goods in exchange for writing about them and readers may not understand those bloggers were compensated. Why do we need government to regulate this? What ever happened to "buyer beware." Their argument is that when you walk into a store, you can identify the salesclerk. My response to that is what makes the salesclerk any more or less trustworthy than anyone else?

For the record, Emergen-C, Dandy Blend, or any other product I've written about, I've had to buy with my own money. I don't receive free gifts to blog, and my blog is just my opinion. I have not scientifically tested the products I review. Now hopefully the FTC won't come after me since I've disclosed this to you!

I'm trying to brain storm for things we can enjoy only in summer time. DH & I realized, since our boys are unschooled, they don't really see summer like we did as kids. Summertime to us meant freedom. Our boys never lose theirs. It made me think about how our life revolves around the seasonal calender rather than a school calendar. Its the seasons and holidays that bring change into our lives. I should focus on that and do a better job with our family traditions.

So what kinds of things do you only enjoy in the summer time? I know trips are the obvious, but I'm looking for life's little pleasures, keeping in mind money doesn't buy happiness.

One of my fave summer things to do is to go to beach after dinner. Sit in our camp chairs + watch the dolphins. So peaceful + calming. They always look like they are having a great time doing flips + jumps.

We don't really have any special summer activities..........Let me see.......Our town has it's kids' Red, White and Blue parade where they all ride their bikes on Main St the Thurs before 4th of July. Of course, then there's the fireworks that same night. Alex usually participates in a Summer Reading Program, but didn't this year. This summer, she's been taking an art class instead. So, I guess I can say a summer learning camp has been part of our summers. Next year, she'll have her first year of church camp. :o) I guess that will be a HUGE memory for her as she gets older.

We don't vacation during the summer because everyone else is doing the same thing.:o)

I know what you mean about our summers as kids being different from our own children's summers. It DID mean freedom! :o) It meant sleeping in and swimming at our friend's lake. Those were the main memories for me and summer.

We don't have young'uns around anymore, so the things we enjoy will be different from those your family might like. Shopping, movies, beach... staying in where it is air conditioned!! It is too hot down here in the summer. We enjoy the outdoors more in the winter!

We enjoy going to the drive-in movies during the summer. Here is a website for drive-in's in WI - http://www.drive-inthruwisconsin.com/Links.htm It takes some planning for the location, movie choices and weather, but we really enjoy the nostalgia! Bring your blankets and a snack! As for cost, it is generally the same as seeing a movie in the theatre.

We don't have drive-ins around here. :o( Growing up, we went. I remember me, my sis and mom would go. Pillows in the car and I think even blankets. We loved it. I wish we had one around here! :o)

As you were wondering about why the signs would be replaced even if the old ones were still just fine... I've also often wondered why there are some "shopping bees" who would go shopping and get new this and that every month. I guess many people just enjoy when they can have new things. When it comes to clothes, I don't buy unless I need something. I also wonder why people would repair if there was nothing wrong with the existing. To me, it'd be just a waste of money and time and energy. New is good, of course, but then it should be reasonable as well. Back to clothes as an example, I also throw no clothes away unless they are in a bad condition. So, I don't need to buy often, but perhaps there are people who behave differently when it comes to old and new things.
