Its probably because I was first introduced to the Vampire-Human love story through the works of Joss Whedon. Having explored all of it before, I found myself reading Twilight expecting something new. I kept reading thinking its bound to get better, more exciting.
Honestly, if this book hadn't been a gift, I wouldn't have finished it. When I mentioned I was having trouble getting into it, the person who gave me the book recommended I read it from a teen girl perspective. That helped, but generally, I don't believe in dumbing down.
I did enjoy the author's writing style and vampire mythology, but the story line seemed so predictable. Again, maybe this is because of my Buffy/Angel corruption?
So go ahead and tell me how wrong I am about this book. It will take a lot of your convincing to get me to read the next one in the series.

Oh, I've had many such experiences! I've read a book which has been praised all over and all the possible ways and I have had such high and great expectations... and then it's turned out that I've read a lot better books than the one I was so much recommended... and mostly it even happens that I'm not willing to unfinish the book because it does not just interest me enough and it doesn't catch me anyhow. I've not read this book but maybe I might have a look. I don't usually lose my interest if I hear they are very good or bad. I make my own impressions because I've had enough experiences that there's a book which has been told off and I find it really good.
I've never read it, but Ivy--nearly a teen girl (help!!)--seems to be quite a fan of this series.
I really liked this book, so much so that I already read the second and have the third in my possession right now. All the girls/women at my work are or have read the entire series so I it is kind of a group bonding thing, and we are all going to go see the movie when it comes out. I haven't read that many "vampire" books and never really got into Buffy or Angel, although I have seen many and have always loved vampire movies. So I don't know if I would feel differently if I had. I did lend it to a friend of mine who is VERY well read, I thought for sure she wouldn't really like it, but today she asked me for the second book, so I guess she did.
LOL! This book was reccommended to my older dd (12) by an online pen pal. I looked it up online, and saw that it was about vampires, and when my dd asked about it I told her that.
I was typing her reply to her pen pal for her, and came across this scentence, "I'm not allowed to read Twilight because it's about vampires." I said, "I didn't say you couldn't read it." She said, "Well, tell me I can't read it." LOL I said I didn't want to, so she got Anna to say she wasn't allowed to read it. LOL Now she can tell her pen pal honestly that she "was told she wasn't allowed to read it." ; )
I loved the series. The writing was was definitely "dumbed down" a bit, but honestly it was the romantic aspect of the books that I really enjoyed. I think every woman needs an Edward, LOL. I actually got chills a few times reading some of the romantic parts, which hasn't happened for a l-o-n-g time. I've read the whole series now, and the first one is definitely, IMO, the best- so if you didn't like that one, there's probably no point in reading further. Just my .02.
