China's Stolen Children

Rating:★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Documentary
I sat down with DS12 to watch this movie yesterday, and it gave me another reason to curse the Chinese government. Did you know 70,000 children go missing in China every year? Its all thanks to China's one child policy.

The movie introduces you to a couple who's 5 year old boy was kidnapped. Boys are in high demand and buyers usually want someone young enough he can't find his way back home, but old enough he doesn't require constant care such as an infant does. This couple is living a nightmare. They risk prosecution for not only speaking with the film makers, but also for putting up missing posters. The Chinese government doesn't want anyone to know the magnitude of this horror.

Due to the demand for boy children, the abortion rate is insane. The father of the missing boy actually was suppose to be aborted himself. His mother already had a child. She became pregnant and they forced her to take abortion medicine when she was almost 9 months pregnant. Her baby was born alive and the government officials fined her. Chinese parents are fined for unauthorized births and these fines are usually very expensive. This is another reason why parents sell their babies. They can't afford to keep them.

There is a shortage of females now, so young women are being kidnapped and sold into marriages. In the documentary, one such girl is rescued, but this is the exception. Most kidnapped children are never recovered.

DS12 had so many great questions while we watched this movie. It was a great educational tool. We won't be blinded by Olympic glamor. China is a dark country with many human right problems.

Wow! What an amazing film. Was this on tv? It would be something I'd be interested in watching. I wonder why, if it's not already done, that women don't get their tubes tied after they have a son. This would eliminate needless deaths and maybe the majority of the kidnapping/missing children cases.
Very sad. :( I'm glad you guys watched it and that you and your son were both able to learn about it.

I see where it's been broadcast on HBO. I googled and found it on YouTube as well. Here is the link for anyone interested.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgFxEPePO6g

Thanks for posting the Youtube link! We watched it on HBO. I don't think sterilization is the answer either. So many people over there are living on next to nothing, they don't have the resources. One young couple was too young to obtain an official marriage certificate, which also meant they couldn't get a birth permit for their daughter. They ended up selling her. It broke my heart. They didn't want to, but felt they had no choice. If you don't have a birth permit, you can't get a birth certificate. Without a birth certificate your child is not recognized by the state so he/she can't attend schools or find work.

I will have to check out this program, I knew there were problems in China but not this seriously. I don't believe China should be hosting the Olympics, its nothing against their people is how the goverment treats their people.

I have a friend who is from China who now lives in the US. She and I briefly talked about China and the limit of children for families living in larger cities a couple of weeks ago. We haven't gotten into deep any deep discussions about China or their laws, so I'm not sure what her thoughts are. She and her family live in the US, so I guess that says enough.

I used to think they shouldn't have been granted the Olympics either, but now I realize all eyes will be on China and reports of the mistreatment of their people will get out.

I think you may have a point about the awareness of it all, Dawn. I never realized what was going on.
:( Maybe this will cause positive change.
